My Restaurants

  1. 1 3.5 Star Rating: Average Influx Cafe Inc
    Read Reviews

1948 Broadway, San Diego, CA 92102 (map)

Hands down the best place for sandwiches, salads and iced tea. It's where I go for lunch and stay all afternoon for the free WiFi and cupcakes. Seriously, try the tuna sandwich (with olives, balsamic vineager, capers and tomato) and then the lemon cupcake.

  2. 2 4 Star Rating: Recommended Mi Guadalajara Taco Shop
    Read Reviews

6358 Del Cerro Blvd, San Diego, CA 92120 (map)

    Three words: Carne asada fries.

  3. 3 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Cafe Chloe
    Read Reviews

721 Ninth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101 (map)

"Happy wife, happy life." My sweetie has made standing reservations here for us every month. He's a very smart sweetie, 'cause he knows that few things make me happier in the world than a nice glass of wine and Chloe's macaroni gratin with pancetta.

  4. 4 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Red Pearl Kitchen
    Read Reviews

440 J St Ste 108, San Diego, CA 92101 (map)

Why I love, and frequent, Red Pearl Kitchen: Because sometimes us gals like to dress cute for dinner; because their cocktail menu is as long and interesting as their dinner menu; because they have perfected the art of spicy, crunchy, sweet, sour cashew chicken.

  5. 5 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Neighborhood
    Read Reviews

777 G St, San Diego, CA 92101 (map)

This place is like an extension of my own kitchen and dining room. Except with much cooler art and a bigger patio. The burger is super tasty, the service is friendly, and just when you think you've got it figured out, Arsalaun throws you a curve ball ... like amazing new mac 'n cheese, or beer school, or 2 for 1 wine nights on Wednesday.

My Bars

  1. 6 4 Star Rating: Recommended Hamltons Tavern
    Read Reviews

1521 30th St, San Diego, CA 92102 (map)

"Where everybody knows your name." Actaully, I don't think anyone here knows my name, but it's the kind of place where the bartenders and regulars are so nice that they'll fake it and pretend they know you, just to keep the vibe nice 'n friendly.

  2. 7 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Bondi
    Read Reviews

333 Fifth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101 (map)

This has been one of my go-to bars downtown since it opened. Love the Cooper's and Carleton on tap, love the calamari munchies, love the no-line, no-cover, no-bull policy that they seem to have a monopoly on in the Gaslamp.

  3. 8 4 Star Rating: Recommended Turf Supper Club
    Read Reviews

1116 25th St, San Diego, CA 92102 (map)

For steaks and sidecars, Turf Club can't be beat. It's also the perfect spot to meet our friends from downtown. But what's with the rumors that it's going to be sold? Or move to La Mesa?

My Special Occasion Place

  1. 9 4 Star Rating: Recommended Anthology
    Read Reviews

1337 India St, San Diego, CA 92101 (map)

I love the big group table for 12 in the back, with a perfect view of the live music stage. When there's a good jazz act in the house, it's the perfect place for a fancy birthday celebration.

My Grocery Store

  1. 10 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Whole Foods Market
    Read Reviews

711 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92103 (map)

Currently, it's the only place I can find fromage d'affinois -- this triple creme cheese that I'm obsessed with right now. Venissimo has it too, but it's closed on Sundays when I do my shopping.

  2. 11 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Grant's Marketplace
    Read Reviews

2953 Beech St, San Diego, CA 92102 (map)

This is my neighborhood market. We stop all the time for coffee, bagels, cheese, milk ... the basics. Joe is great, and we love running into the neighbors.

My Takeout Spot

  1. 12 3 Star Rating: Average City Wok
    Read Reviews

718 W Washington, San Diego, CA 92103 (map)

I'm not a huge takeout person, other than pizza, but when I do get a craving for Asian takeout, I always head to City Wok for cashew chicken, egg rolls and City Wok shrimp. And if you go on Sundays, you get a half-off coupon to use on the following Monday.

My Shopping

  1. 13 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Azzaria Denim
    Read Reviews

2029 San Elijo Ave, Cardiff by the Sea, CA 92007 (map)

It's a denim dream world in here, and my sweetie likes it too because they have a keg in the back with beer on tap.

  2. 14 4 Star Rating: Recommended Target
    Read Reviews

1288 Camino Del Rio N, San Diego, CA 92108 (map)

So, my editor said I have to be open and honest with my picks ... and I must admit that I love Target! I can spend a solid 2 hours in here, looking at all the cheap jewelry, the workout clothes, all the great gift-wrapping stuff and cards, and I love all the random dollar bins at the front.

  3. 15 Anthropologie
    Write a review

1911 Calle Barcelona, Carlsbad, CA 92009 (map)

I always get inspired to redecorate a bathroom or my kitchen whenever I walk through Anthropologie. If only I could afford it!

My Salons

  1. 16 4 Star Rating: Recommended Lulu's By Travis Parker
    Read Reviews

2348 30th Street, San Diego, CA 92104 (map)

Every gal has her vices. One of mine is pedicures. The other is strawberry ice cream. Luckily, Lulu's is the most adorable, old-fashioned nail salon and it's right across the street from The Daily Scoop, which is right around the corner from my house. Score!

  2. 17 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended V Workshop
    Read Reviews

900 F St, San Diego, CA 92101 (map)

Before Shelisa (above), Alberto was my man. He's great with long-hair styles and has this adorable nail salon next to his shop.

  3. 18 Salon Mirror Mirror
    Write a review

148 S Solana Hills Dr, Solana Beach, CA 92075 (map)

Shelissa was my friend before she did my hair. And every single time we hung out--shopping, lunching, happy hour--people were always coming up to her asking who did her hair. She has the best hair! She literally walks around with biz cards in her purse to hand out because so many people comment on her hair! So, now she does mine, too.

My Spa

  1. 19 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Hyde Edwards Salon & Spa
    Read Reviews

2308 Kettner Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101 (map)

Hands down, the best massage I've had all year.

My Go-to Gift Shop

  1. 20 San Diego Museum of Art
    Write a review

1450 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101 (map)

Prints, frames, sculpture, art books, cards: They have it all at this gift shop, and I can always find something perfect for friends and family no matter their age or interests.

  2. 21 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Great News Discount Cookware
    Read Reviews

1788 Garnet Ave, San Diego, CA 92109 (map)

I buy lots of fun cooking and kitchen gadgets here as gifts, but mostly I go for gift certificates to their cooking classes. They have everything from cheese-pairing classes to knife skills -- the perfect gift for anyone who likes to eat!

  3. 22 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Upstart Crow & Co
    Read Reviews

835 W Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA 92101 (map)

It's not easy to get to (parking in Seaport Village is such a pain) but you can find the most random, cool stuff. Funky card games, wooden kids' toys, old San Diego memorabilia, hard-to-find books, and tons of writing and reading gifts.

My Tourist Spots

  1. 23 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Coronado Ferry Landing
    Read Reviews

    1201 1st St Ste K-6, Coronado, CA 92118 (map)

Sure, the ocean views and west-facing sunsets are more than fabulous in San Diego, but I'd much rather look back at the big, wide bay and city skyline. During sunset, the whole city glows when you're looking back from Coronado.

  2. 24 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended World Famous
    Read Reviews

711 Pacific Beach Dr, San Diego, CA 92109 (map)

There's no better people-watching at the beach than out on the covered patio at World Famous. More often than not, "Flash"--our famous local streaker-on-skates--whizzes by at least twice on any given weekend morning. Throw in a few of their famous mimosas and lobster tacos, and you're set on the 'wow' factor for any out-of-town guests.

  3. 25 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Top Of The Hyatt
    Read Reviews

1 Market Pl, San Diego, CA 92101 (map)

Whenever I have a colleague, editor or business person in town for just an evening or even just a few hours (passing through on their way to TJ), I often opt for a quick cocktail up on the Hyatt's roof. Granted, two cocktails will run you well over $20, but 360-degree views of the city lights can't be beat, and it's within walking distance of almost everything downtown.

My Random Favorites in San Diego

  1. 26 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Venissimo Cheese
    Read Reviews

754 W Washington, San Diego, CA 92103 (map)

I love the service in here. They'll let you sample dozens of cheeses in order to find just the right one.

  2. 27 Ocean Beach Farmer's Market
    Write a review

Newport Ave, San Diego, CA 92107 (map)

I love the OB market on Wednesdays, and just OB in general. It's great people watching, and it feels like one of the last truly authentic neighborhoods in San Diego.
