Doobie Brothers Editorial Review
The Skinny
Throughout their long career the Doobie Brothers have produced singles that have successfully blended rock, jazz, R&B, gospel and country sounds in seamless blends of genres. One of the most popular of a bunch of California pop/rock bands to come to prominence in the '70s, the Doobies are also one of the few bands to have evolved beyond their original sound. Much of the credit for that evolution was due to the influence of keyboardist and songwriter Michael McDonald, who introduced a funkier, jazzier sound to the band's repertoire when he joined in 1975. Although the band broke up in 1982, it reunited without McDonald in 1987. McDonald subsequently rejoined the band in 1995.
