The problem is the owner, Mark Dion
by btc2112
Can I give zero stars? No? Ok, well I'm giving one star under protest. The numerous problems with this place can all be traced back to one source, Cityboxing owner and founder Mark Dion. I'm not here to unfairly bash people or sling mud but this "man" was one of the most arrogant, rude, and condescending people I have ever come across. He is the reason Dean Lister and other numerous quality trainers have fled to greener, more professional, more noble pastures. Dion's brash arrogance has obviously rubbed off on his staff, most notably his senior managers and it's no surprise this place is receiving such horrible reviews. There are far better mixed discipline gyms out there at a much better price. Better yet if you're in PB and you want quality instruction without the B.S. or ego, head up Cass Street to PB Fight Center and go train REAL Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Rodrigo Medeiros. You won't regret it...
- Pros: ?
- Cons: where to begin...
Managers are out for money!!!!
by mrox
Ppsshh 'Deb' probably works for City Boxing. Management started from a ridiculously high price then supposedly brought it down to a low price. I checked online later and saw that the 'low' price they came up with was actually the regular price advertised. So do your research!
Mike was really nice when trying to get me to sign up. But they make you feel forced to put money down as soon as you walk in. Stupid me, I signed up. That night I felt I was hussled for money so the very next day I went to cancel. They say it takes 30 days to get my money back!!! It hadn't even been 24 hours since I signed!!! Mike became very arrogant and rude once he found out I was leaving. He kills it for the gym!!! Makes people feel ripped off.
Read the terms. If you sign on the dotted line you have 5 days to cancel, but it supposedly takes 30 days to get your money back. After the 5 days, if you aren't happy, TOO BAD, you can only cancel if you move 25 miles or more away or if you become disabled.
More inexpensive and better gyms, with better management out there.
- Pros: The Trainers seem like good people
- Cons: Management seem like husslers
There are better jiu-jitsu studios in San Diego

I got locked into a 12 month contract when Mike Fowler and Brandon Vera, both proven world class athletes, were teaching and training at City Boxing. Both of them left and are no longer teaching. Now, we have blue belts and even white belts teaching class. For $150 - 190/ month -- that's ridiculous. IT'S been almost 3 months without at least a purple belt teaching.
- Pros: Two locations
- Cons: No world class blackbelts, crowded facilities, poor customer service
