With a fresh garden out back this redesigned restaurant has undergone some changes but it still a good stop for wine and small plates.
Bad Service Average Food..
I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I took my Mom here for her birthday. When I made the reservation and when they called me to confirm the reservation that day the hostess also confirmed with me that it's a bday and they'd bring a little cake out. After we had dinner there was no cake, nothing. Overstaffed but still slow service, a sign of poor management. More staff than customers. The food was decent, but for the price I've had much better food they ran out of 2 entrees on the menu which let a very limited choice.
Then when our waiter (Sal) picked up the bill he literally stared at it in front of us (to see the tip) very rude I've never witnessed that before. I called to complain, to a manager who apologized to me, siad she'd call me back and never did. For this amount of money go somewhere else who will treat you right.
One of the best Filets EVER!!!. I went here on Christmas night and was blown away. The entire staff was amazing and the food was even better! I loved the decor and uniforms but the star of the place is definitely the food. The lamb was fantastic, the duck appetizer was perfect but the oversized filet was juicy and cooked perfectly. By the time we got there the Chef was gone, but his sous chef and entire kitchen staff took care of everything!! I can't wait to go back and try some other items.
California cuisine done in the popular farm-to-table style replaces the old J Taylor's at the L'Auberge Del Mar resort..
In Short
With a little something for everyone, Paul McCabe's stunning new restaurant 1540 fits the bill perfectly for the part-resort, part-local vibe that dominates the Del Mar dining scene. Between the expansive wood deck off the hotel's lobby (with gasp-inducing ocean views), the narrow dining room open to the exhibition kitchen, and the wraparound patio complete with cabanas and firepits, choosing a seat might be more difficult than choosing an entree. McCabe's new menu doesn't make deciding any easier, but we wouldn't have it any other way. Between the hard-to-find artisan cheeses and charcuterie, to the small plates and raw plates of light, seasonal bites meant to share, to luxurious entrees like Scottish salmon (with preserved lemon spaetzle no less!) or Kurobuta pork shoulder, eating here requires great restraint ... or plenty of return visits.
