Editorial Review for Old Lahaina Town--Lahaina Luau – by Suz Andreasen
The Appeal
A rambling boardwalk around Lahaina Harbor leads to an assortment of unique and colorful shops. The rustic town stays true to its roots, with an abundance of scrimshaw pendants and whale-a-bilia in every nook and cranny. Local landmarks ooze Old-World charm, including the Baldwin Home, which hosts some of Hawaii's top lei makers. Wander past giant banyan trees to Papalua Street, where Lahaina Shopping Center offers an array of crafts and trinkets.
The Experience
A true feast for the senses, Old Lahaina Town's luau includes an evening of food, music and the swaying dance of hula masters. After being welcomed with a lei and a tropical drink, guests are escorted to a table beneath swaying palms at water's edge. As the sun sets and torches are lit, an Imu oven pit is unveiled and traditional hula chanting begins. The buffet features local specialties, including guava chicken, Kalua Pork, fresh island fruits and Lau Lau.

My family and Friends attended last Month (July 2005). Last time I was there was 1996 on our honeymoon. They had the fire eater/dancer/jugglers. Also they have the beginning of the show w/ the queen riding the canoe and coming from the beach and that was fantastic. They took both of them out. Seems like they are doing all the short cuts nowadays. It's so commercialized and overrated. That's why by their entrance lobby the best of Maui plaques on display are only 1997, 98 and 99. For $89.00 an adult and $62.00 for child it's not worth it. Food also is not that great anymore. I heard Maui Marriot is a little bit better and a little bit cheaper.
Pros: Beautiful Dancers
Cons: No Fire Dancer, Food used to be bette, No Dramatic Entrance

While more expensive than most Luaus in the area, it is definitely worth the price. From the magnificent sunset view to the ceremonial raising of the pig from the buried oven to the incredible feast and talent, you dont want to miss it! It is popular however, so you'll want reservations. If you have a wife who likes to volunteer you for crazy things like mine does, then you may get called up to dance with the dancers...don't worry though, payback is inevitable when they tell you to bring them up too! :-)
