“Bad customer service and teachers”
Surfing is a huge part of our identity here on the west coast and we’re proud to have some of the best beaches for it right here in San Diego. Since the 1960’s people have been learning that surfing really is one of the best ways to get out there and enjoy the water. If your kids always wanted to learn how to surf or maybe you yourself have always wanted to give it a try, there are plenty of ways to get into the water; but by far the best way is to learn from someone who really knows what they’re doing. That’s why there is Surfari in Mission Beach, family-owned and operated, there is no better surf school in the area.
All ages are welcome at Surfari and most clients are up and riding by their third wave. Put best by owner Rick Gehris, “The only requirement is the desire to learn. If you can walk you can surf.” Maybe you’re just visiting and you want to go back home knowing you gave our lifestyle the full go. Surfari has everything available to rent that you need to get in the water like boards, wetsuits and rash guards. If you’re a little hesitant at being out in the waves, Rick has 10 years of experience as a life guard so you know it’s safe out there. Surfari offers lessons year round, 7 days a week at multiple times throughout the day. All lessons are 2.5 hours and consist of a land instruction, water instruction and independent practice. Surfari also offers surf camps during the summer. Camps are 5 days of 4-hour instructions. Camps are offered for ages 8 – 13 as well as 13 and up. Some of the differences you’ll find at Surfari besides the cost is a customer satisfaction initiative as well as lockers, in-house showers and a shop location just a block from the beach.
So if your kids are begging you to learn or you’ve always wanted to give it a try, come to Mission Beach and talk to Surfari about receiving expert instructions. You’ll be set for life on getting out and enjoying the waves all over the west coast.
Best Surf Shop. I am from Charlotte, NC and have been visiting Surfari every summer for about six years now. All of the prices are very affordable and well worth the cost. The owner Rick and all of the insructors are amazing people and surfers. They are very helpful, kind, and truely care about the well being and safety of their students. The lessons are taught thorougly with well trained knowledge and you will come out of the lesson knowing everything you need to about surfing. Just being around people associated with Surfari and in the shop brightens my day.
Awesome surf lesson.
My friends talked me into taking a surf lesson and I had an amazing time. I am from Atlanta and I have never been in the ocean before. I can't believe that I actually stood up and rode a wave in the Pacific Ocean. I am so happy with this whole experience and want to thank my instructor Rory for doing a wonderful job.
Surfari surf school. My grandson, 10 years old, wanted to have surfing lessons as a birthday present. I decided to take him to Surfari Surf School and it turned out to be the best experience he has ever had. My grandson needs to exercise and he was fascinated with his experience. His instructor was enthusiastic with his performance and encouraged him through every step. I would highly recommend Surfari Surf!
San Diego Spring Break.
On behalf of our entire family, I want to say thanks and great job! We took a surf lessons at Surfari as a last minute idea and it turned out better than expected. Aaron was our instructor and he was awesome!!! He was patient, clear, and easy to follow. Hats off to him and the rest of the Surfari crew that helped make our spring break lots of fun!
See you next time!!!
Super Stoked!!!. Blast was had by all! Took the wife and kids into Mission and scored some good surf at Surfari. Dave did a wonderful job with the lessons and we will come back next time. Thanks for getting us stoked on surfing!
Awesome. Took a surf lesson with Mark and loved it! Came back the next day and rented a surfboard. Looking to buy a board soon.
Surfari Surf Lesson. My son Ben is enrolled in surf camp this week and he loves it! He inspired me to take a surf lesson with his instructor Rory after camp. I just want to say Wow....what an amazing experience this has been for me. Rory is a very kind and patient teacher. Good job Surfari!
Bad customer service and teachers. I see these great reviews about this place, so I have to put my 2 cents in. I had a very poor experience with this company recently. This leads to me to believe that there's been a change of management, or they just don't give a crap about their customers anymore. From the first interaction on the phone, to the entire lesson was a total wash. The guys I talked to, both on the phone and in person, were rude and a bit condescending. Sorry, I'm not a seasoned surfer- that's why I'm here!!! Giving you money!!! The lesson was quick and dirty, and the instructor, Dave or Dan or something, was totally disinterested. I still haven't mentioned the dirty wet suit, disgusting "changing room" (more like janitor's closet), and their accusations of another lesson participant of shop lifting. But, you get the idea. There are a bunch of other schools in this area, I wish I had gone to instead, but hopefully I save someone else time and money.
Poor instruction; look elsewhere.
I wanted to take a group lesson here, and talked to someone on the phone beforehand. When I got there, they said that there was only one other person wanting a lesson, so they charged me the more expensive "semi-private" fee.
Our instructor's name was Dave. If you go here, make sure you do NOT get him. He kept leaving us to go talk to other people. He was supposed to do 30 minutes of on land instruction, then one hour in the water, with the last hour being free time with the equipment. His instruction was quick and confusing. He did not explain anything, and used terms that a beginner would not be familiar with. He may be a good surfer, but he's definatley not a good teacher. He spent maybe 10 minutes with us on land, and about 30 minutes with us in the water.
Hopefully their other instructors are better teachers, and more attentive to their students, giving them what they pay for. I could have learned the same thing renting my own equipment and talking to a random surfer on the beach. I would not recommend this place, and I will be checking out one of the other schools next time. There are quite a few in the area with the same pricing.
