Editorial Review for Hot Dog on a Stick – by Gina Goff
In Short
With more than 120 locations sprinkled throughout U.S. shopping centers, this quick-service chain has become a favorite among sububan shoppers. The employee-owned corporation staffs its branches with perky workers who don the brand's iconic 1960s-inspired uniforms: whimsically colorful jockey caps and striped smocks. The short menu offers 100 percent turkey franks, which are served skewered and battered, as well as all-beef wieners in a bun. Extras include "Cheese on a Stick" (also coated and deep-fried in the secret-recipe batter) and shoestring fries.

"Hot Dog on a Stick" was started at Muscle Beach, Santa Monica, California in 1946. Dave Barham started with an idea - treat people to an experience. He built his business around the concepts of putting people first, and giving them a show. Employees of Hot Dog on a Stick wear a whimsical mid-1960s uniform with hot pants and a jockey cap. The company vision: "We keep it simple." Quality turkey hot dogs are dipped in batter and cooked with 100% vegetable oil to a dark golden brown perfection with mustard and ketchup available to compliment the taste. 250 calories per dog with 14g of fat (4g saturated) or the veggie dog at 180 calories with only 3g of fat (0.5g saturated). The employees own the company. Carlsbad CA's Fredrica Thode, President and CEO, passed away in January '07 after a prologed illness. She said "We have very low turnover because of employee ownership." She also said "When you sell (hot dogs) at $2.50 apiece, you have to be where a lot of people are." She was a very much loved leader and inspiration to those who knew her. I picked this company for my 300th review because they are totally California and prove that people centered values will endure forever!

I really love getting their limeade here and sometimes if I feel particularly guilty, I'll order the sugar-free lemonade. The staff is friendly and their chicken corndogs are good. But let's face it: it's still Hot Dog On A Stick.
