Beach Bar

Not your ordinary rooftop bar.

  • Private Cabana Rentals
  • Open till 2am
  • Bottle Service Available

Why not relax a bit? Sun in the day and play in the night. With three cabanas, fire pit, and heated sand, Beach offers San Diego a unique alternative to the ordinary rooftop bar. Two full-service bars, private cabana rentals, and bottle service are available.

Editorial Review for Beach Bar – by Whitney Friedlander

In Short
A grand staircase from the hotel lobby--which morphs into a chic lounge after dark--leads up to an outdoor oasis on the 4th floor roof. With warm, white sand underfoot, well-groomed groups dressed casually hip in designer jeans and shirts sip chardonnay and martinis while gossiping near the fire pit or lounging in large white cabanas. Light techno music gets louder and funkier as the night wears on.

Insider Tips

Parking

Around $8 after the W's partial validation. And it's a good 8-10 blocks (or $10 pedi-cab ride) outside the heart of the Gaslamp scene, so many downtown lots are too far to walk.

When to Go

A line starts forming around 10:30pm on weekends, so get there earlier if you don't want to wait.

I went here with my uncle and his date after dinner back in early 2002. We arrived fairly early, and we were able to get prime seating directly in front of their fire pit. The drinks were pricey but strong. The sand was a nice touch, and the background music was decent. As the night progressed, the place became crowded, seemingly beyond capacity. People practically fought for seating near the fire pit as the temperature dropped. I'd recommend this as a great place for after-dinner cocktails, but if crowds aren't your thing, then avoid the Beach Bar for late weekend evenings.

Cons: Noisy, crowded, cold if you're not near the fire pit.

Warm sand a firepit make it really unique and a great place to hang out. And if the weather is not so great you can still enjoy the "Living Room" downstairs.

The W's trendy rooftop bar brings the beach--sand and all--into the heart of downtown.  See the full editorial review.
