Disappointed would be an understatement......... We're from out of town and chose this restaurant out of Fodor's.....it was even rated a "Fodor's Choice." Our server treated us as if we'd never eaten in a Thai restaurant before, explaining what "satay" was (while pronouncing it wrong) and so on. We're in our 50's, restaurant owners ourselves and well traveled. We let her know that we had a time limit but she couldn't have been more clueless. After our (leisurely) appetizer, she asked if she should put in the order for our entrees! We finally had to ask for a doggy bag twice but she couldn't find our food that she'd carried off to pack up. The food was extremely mediocre across the board and expensive for the quality. We were expecting excellent royal Thai food. We also got to listen to the owner kiss up to the hotel concierge seated at the next table making sure that she "sent everyone his way" while showering them with freebies. Not a good experience at all.
Great Atmosphere. If we had to walk away with one thing - I would say that the ambience was fabulous. Hip and trendy bar in the front (waiting area lounge while we waited for our table). However the restaurant was almost like a little trip back to Asia. Running water, dimmed lights, warm air - it felt as if you were sitting outside in Thailand - though thankfully not nearly as humid. It was cold outside when we went, so it was quite pleasant. We liked the option that they gave for a semi-private feel with booths that could be closed off with drapes. Very romantic. The food was very good also - definitely one of the better Thai restaurants. Presenation of the food was good. The menu offers all dishes, with your choice of meat (veggie options are an option also). This is a nice change - allowing diners to get their favourite dish, with the preferred meat of choice. Although this then does not really allow the diner to fully experience the 'authentic' dish - as it's meant to be done. However the food was delicious. The wait staff were very attentive and helpful. Impressive wine list also. I would definitely go back.
Worst Service I've had in SD in 5 years.
Stay far away - owner needs a reality check.
I had the displeasure of meeting the owner of Rama, Alex Thao personally last Friday night, and I can only say he his smarmy. We had reservations for 9pm, and after 45 minutes and many questions about when we would be seated (and no offer for a cocktail on the house while we waited) Alex informed us we would not be seated at his restaurant. He took offense when I told him that part of running a restaurant is keeping the reservation, or at the bare minimum keeping the waiting guests happy. The entire bar was filled with guests who were more than a 1/2 hour past their reservation time. It is obvious that Alex packs his reservation list, so he can get more people into his restaurant, and as they wait, they spend even more at the bar. Pure shyster. Any good restaurateur would have gone out of his/her way to accommodate the guests, even for a 5 minute wait. I can not urge you enough to stay far from this place.
Rama is San Diego's Best. I've eatem at a couple of Thai places in San Diego and I think that Rama has the best ambience and great food. My girlfriend enjoyed the Thai margaritas and I enjoyed looking smooth at a cool place. Recommend!
