Editorial Review for Waterfront Bar & Grill – by Erin Chambers

In Short
With large windows and an always-open door that faces bustling Kettner Blvd, this friendly watering hole is a longtime favorite among Downtown's after-work set. Cocktail tables line a few yards of sidewalk out front, and a U-shaped bar takes up the bulk of space inside the salt-cured wooden walls lined with old photos of San Diego's founding tuna fisherman. Regulars order burgers or the famous grilled cheese and choose from several locally brewed ales.

Insider Tips

Parking

Don't. Walk here from downtown or take the trolley to the County Center stop and walk east to Kettner. Otherwise, it's a battle with Little Italy residents for a street meter after 6pm.

The Extras

The yellow fisherman on the roof is a statue. Bar flies seated outside get a kick out of how long tourists stand and stare.

Whenever I am suffering from a hangover on a Sunday morning (they open very early) the Waterfront is one of my first places to visit to recuperate. I will hang out on one of the tables overlooking Kettner, order some breakfast and sip on Bloody Mary's till I am somewhat cognizant of my surroundings. The food is reasonably priced and a value. The service is excellent. My only beef with the place is the lack of parking. But it should be expected since Little Italy is one of the more trendier places to live in San Diego. You will enjoy your visit here. Just make sure you take your time and talk to the girls behind the counter. They are very friendly and always have a story to tell.

Pros: good food, fast friendly service, local landmark

Cons: lack of parking

Downtown's oldest tavern stays local with no-frills fare and a bar staff that remembers your name.  See the full editorial review.
