Editorial Review for Aubergine – by Whitney Friedlander
In Short
Past the bouncer and a few outdoor tables is a large black-and-gray dance floor framed by wood-paneled and white and mauve-painted walls. Around 10pm, the few tables left over from those enjoying an early evening meal or cocktail are cleared for a gathering of dress-to-impress 30-somethings. A few steps above the floor is a sushi bar that stays open until 11 and black leather couches for those interested in bottle service.

Food: Very good sushi and not your typical “happy hour sushi” quality either. Keep in mind that although the rolls are indeed $3 each, they will add an automatic gratuity. Ordering a top shelf vodka martini will set you back $12 each. If you don’t get there until after 7:30, be prepared to wait or have reservations. Service: We go to Friday night happy hours about twice a month for the past year or so, leave good tips and the hostesses & wait staff still never recognizes us. If they do, it’s never acknowledged. So for service, I can say that they do what they can without too much attitude. Most of the time they seem pretty hurried and stressed out so I’ll be nice enough and deal with it as the rolls are just that good of a deal. I hear that they are no longer doing Thursday night happy hour. Nightclub: I’ve been coming to this club since 2002 when I celebrated the new year there. Since I live downtown, I’ve got perfect opportunity to visit frequently but haven’t been so much recently since I’m happy attached these days. Since then I have visited on the occasional weekend and I’ve watched the riff-raff slowly infiltrate the place. Still, it’s a great place for young singles and ladies, if you’re looking to meet someone you can still count on a fun time with decent music and more than likely leave with at least one phone number. Last time I was there on Saturday night there WAS a fight in the main dance floor and I saw a woman in the bathroom wearing a sweater but no pants. No kidding – no pants. Think longish, hip length v-neck sweater, a thong and heels and out you go! I watched her walking around the club a bit and was surprised that she was virtually unnoticed because it was so crowded. I don’t get offended by this sort of behavior because I only go to these kind of places to people watch – and I’m never disappointed here!
Pros: Excellent Sushi Happy Hour Fridays
Cons: Be prepared to wait for a table
