Editorial Review for The Spot – by Mary Morley
In Short
Though this restaurant is within spitting distance of several ritzy hotels, it manages to maintain a laid-back charm. Witness the painting of an old, pot-bellied surfer just inside the door. The restaurant is divided into a narrow bar area on the left and a dining room on the right; both have wood paneling and brown leather booths. The menu ranges from burgers and grilled snapper tacos to lobster tails and bacon-wrapped filet mignon.

I would avoid this place if you can. I have been there a few times thinking that maybe i just caught the staff on a bad day...but I realized that they are just rude. I would especially avoid this place if the night manager is working. I have seen her in action more than once and I almost left based on how she treated other patrons. With the exception of a friendly bartender this place is not worth the time or money for the overpriced and flavorless food it serves. I also question the cleanliness of the place...if you step in there you will see why. Avoid this place, but if you do decide to go and your server ends up being Nancy...good luck...
Pros: Friendly bartender
Cons: EVERYTHING ELSE...especially management

A recent experience at this establishment merits a mention here as it involves extremely rude behavior by the “owner”. Our party of 3 had just ordered our dinner, when a young man poked his head in our booth and said loudly and sardonically, “Thanks for stealing our menu covers.” He disappeared, before we could react. I asked our waiter, a very pleasant young man, who that person was. He said embarrassed, “The owner.” To make a long story short, “The owner” accused us of theft, refused to address the issue, refused to identify himself, and remained extremely unpleasant and impolite. I should mention that our party included me, a business exec in my forties, a guest – she is a business exec from Europe, and my father who at 81 is a retired physician and a long term resident of La Jolla. While this incident might be explained as the frustrated reaction of a tired and overwhelmed restaurateur to the day’s events, insulting customers are never acceptable service. La Jolla has a lot of great places to eat, avoid this one.
