For anyone that has lived in San Diego for a while, you already know Karl Strauss Brewery is a fixture here. They brew great beer and good food.
I must admit, I haven't been here for a while, and really had no desire to visit again. Not that I had a bad experience there - maybe I just always knew it would be there, so there was no rush in stopping in.
I decided to have lunch and see how old Karl was doing after me being absent there for about 5 years. Wow, I did forget how good their beer was. Yum! I sat at the bar and had a great beer sampler. I liked all of them!
As far as food goes, I decided to order an Avocado Turkey Burger and it was delicious. It was juicy, a little spicy, savory, (hold on, my mouth is starting to water thinking about eating it again) and all around good.
I will definitely be visiting this place much more frequently than once every 5 years. I might just have to go every couple of weeks.
Decent beer, service was kind of rough. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I was expecting five-star service at a local brewery, but it was pretty bad. I will have to say they do a great job with their beer although I wish it had a little more body to it. I personally had the red trolley, and although it was good to finish was kind of watery. Overall I will definitely be coming back in giving them a second shot.
worst service ever. to all firefighting brothers stay away from this place. asked for a table after being in san diego for 2 weeks on the Witch fire and these people wouldnt even give us the time of day. asked to sit at the bar at least for a glass of water since we werent going to be served and even that was to much for them. 11-1-07 5:30pm
Locally owned brewery and restaurant serves an extensive list of beers and hearty comfort food in a lively indoor/outdoor setting..
In Short
Beautifully manicured walking paths, lush gardens and a Japanese koi pond provide a picturesque view at this spirited watering hole. Ten handcrafted beers are always on tap and the menu includes a wide variety of appetizers, sandwiches, steaks, pizza and other pub grub. Specialties include firecracker sirloin tips, barbecued ribs and beer-battered fish and chips, but regulars also rave about the honey lager chicken and the double cheddar burger.
Awesome atmosphere, so-so food. Located where a Japanese restaurant would be more appropriately found, Karl Strauss has a fine selection of beers, if not the best selection of food. Japanese architecture and even a koi pond seem almost too fancy for the type of food served: an odd mixture of German and Creole food (the likes of which I have yet to see elsewhere). Very romantic at night; this is probably the best atmosphere one can get in the Mira Mesa area.
