Editorial Review for Basic Urban Kitchen and Bar – by Erin Chambers

In Short
Three large, glass garage doors open into the spacious warehouse-turned-neighborhood hangout. Industrial track lighting lines the 20-foot ceilings, from which sheer panels hang to the floor to separate lounge and bar areas. Proud to uphold its monkier, just a few oversized ottomans and one purple felt pool table mark the simple space. Friendly villagers pack in after work or pre-Padre game to munch on huge pizzas and sip locally brewed beers.

Insider Tips

When to Go

It's one block from Petco, so arrive well before the first pitch on game days.

Know Before You Go

Well-behaved dogs are welcome during not-so-crowded hours on the west half of the bar.

On the Menu

The menu is simple and basic: Just pizza. They are New Haven-style thin crust pizzas, topped anyway you like with ingredients like garlic, spinach, sausage and even mashed potatoes.

I like the pizza at Basic, but the service is horrible. The girls that work there look miserable! No smiles, not friendly, and slow. I would only go back for the yummy pizza.

Pros: Good Pizza

Cons: Horrible service

This is our new neighborhood hangout in the East Village. I guess it's been open for a while, but we went last week to taste some local beers, and just had such an awesome time. The staff and bartenders are chill, but they still know a lot about beer. The pizzas are simple and cheap and perfect for low-key, but still very "downtown" kind of night. keep it up basic, and please, open up one of these places by the beach!
