Having been rated "Top New Restaurant Worldwide" by Conde Nast publications should tell you how good this restaurant really is & if that's not enough validation, ask the locals. Their philosophy is simple, "just as important as what is on the plate or how it tastes is where it came from and what it took to get there." That is why they have partnered up with local farmers, ranchers & fisherman committed to providing the best possible product in the most conscientious way. They have also dedicated themselves to baking, curing, ageing, pickling & churning everything in house so expect an ever-changing seasonal menu designed to satisfy the seasoned gourmand or the simple eater. Be sure to try some of the house favorites like the cutting board with house cured meats and cheeses, some foodie selections like roasted bone marrow, sweet breads or braised pork belly and for everyone else, there's …
Great Service, Horrible Food and Worse Management.
I went to this location on 1/18/2010 for restaurant week. I chose it because i read great things online and thought, 'why not!'
Well i was thrilled with the service and thought it was top notch, but utterly disappointed with the food. I didn't bring it up at the time of dining since i was with a close friend playing 'catch up' so i wrote to the email address provided on their website and let them know the following:
1. That Crows Pass Farm Greens Salad was absolutely amazing, kudos! Very delicious and satisfying.
2. The Maine Scallops were not very good unfortunately. As soon as it was delivered, I could smell the 'fishy smell' which shouldn't really happen if it's fresh. But I didn't judge it based on that... so as I sampled it, it was gritty almost like there was still some sand on it? to be honest, I'm not sure why it was gritty. But the thing that was really bad was the salt. It was SUPER SALTY. I mean, I'm a salt lover and usually salt whatever, but this was so salty that I couldn't eat more than one scallop. I didn't even bother taking it home for left overs.
3. As for the desert, wasn't too pleased with that either. I ordered the Banana Mousse (the exact name escapes me) but there was no mousse at all. The banana filling had the texture of flan. I ate maybe two bites and was over it. The chocolate on top was congealed and very unappetizing.
One would naturally think that they would apologize and try to regain my business with the well known motto ' kill them with kindness' but alas, this the response i get basically started off nice, but then the Managing Partner, Arturo Kassel, quickly changed the tone of the email and stated "When you don't let us know, you are not giving us a fair chance" as if it was my fault for not bringing it up in person...
Unfortunately, I would never recommend this restaurant. Which is regrettable since I had high hopes based on the reviews I had read...So lesson learned: NEVER GO TO WHISKNLADLE!
One of the Best Restaurants in SD. From the second we reaced the door, our expectations were met and exceeded at Whisknladle. Our server was very knowledgable and explained the philosophy of the owner and restaurant. The food was amazing! The "Cutting Board" was excellent, and featured house cured and prepared meats and cheeses that were some of the best my wife and I had ever had. The flatbread pizza was very good as well. We got an additional side of veggies (locally organically grown, like most food here) which was also stupendous. The veggies including yellow squash, zuccini, corn, green beans, and eggplants. For dessert, my wife and I split a scoop of the chocolate peanut butter ice cream, which included some berries and a wafflecone-esque cup. Completely out of this world! All throughout our meal, servers would stop by very often and ask how we were doing or take our empty dishes. Highest recommendations!
La Jolla's latest village hangout focuses on a slow-food menu full of local ingredients, including beer and house-infused liquors.
In Short
From the large patio in front full of garden-like tables, Whisknladle still shows signs of it's past life as "ladies-who-lunch" mecca, Fresh. But one glimpse of the sleek new bar and lounge zone with pendant lighting and shiny white ottomans, and we're reminded of its new life as simple, hip, neighborhood spot for drinks and food. Owner Arturo continues to work with chef Ryan on the slow food-focused menu, compiled of mostly local and sustainably produced produce. Standout appetizers include a tangy beet and tangerine salad, smokey grilled asparagus and rotating soups made fresh daily. Lunch and dinner menus vary widely, from homemade papardelle pasta with bolognese sauce to Niman Ranch hanger steak to chorizo and date fritters.
All Around Great Place. My friends and I tried Whisk & Ladle on a recommendation from a friend. We arrived on a Friday night and sat out on the covered patio. We started by ordering one of the many unusual cocktails on the menu containing everything from lavender to chili peppers. The menu lists the dishes in order of light to heavy dishes. We ordered asparagus, spicy shrimp, flatbread pizza and mussels to start. Everyone was really happy with the variety and freshness of the dishes. I had butternut squash ravioli in a delicious rich and sweet sauce and others tried fish or steak dishes. We thought the ambiance and service was great.
favorite place for late night drinks and friends. A couple of my girlfriends mentioned a cool new restaurant and lounge they had just been to. They suggested that we go there for our next get together. So the other night a couple of us headed there in the later evening to have a few drinks and some late night food. I was surprised to find drinks with ingredients that I had not really seen around town. We all tried to order a different one to get to try all of them. There was a passion fruit sangria, one with smoked pear and vanilla pear with rum, and another with Sweet & Vicious basil rum, watermelon, habanero syrup. We also ordered some of the food off the Happy Hour meeting it was really great too. What a fun night!
Yum Yum Yum. I went here for dinner last week and it was fantastic. We had been quite some time back when it was formerlly Fresh and they have made some beautiful changes to the restaurant as well as with the menu. I had the Golden Grouper which was very flavorful and served with a salsa verde, and my girlfriend went with the ravioli dish which she raved about. Good food and a great atmosphere check this place out!
Best Brunch Menu. After hearing some good things about Whisknladle, I decided to take my mother out for lunch there. Because it was a Sunday afternoon we were able to try some of the brunch additions, which ended up being a great discovery. While I stuck to traditional lunch food (I ordered the Grilled Cheese sandwich) my mother got the Rosemary Bacon Waffles. As soon as the server brought our food out we knew we were going to be in for a treat. Both the waffles and the sandwich were unlike anything I have ever tasted before. The infusion apples in both dishes was genius! I definitely plan on going back for dinner and seeing what brilliant pairings they have featured in their entrees!
Just Wonderful.... This place is great... I enjoyed the food tremendously... Wonderful service... but I especially loved the wine selection... Im surely coming back!!!
FRESHEST. I've seen their ads claiming to be fresher and I have to say after having been their twice, they are selling themselves short. The food was perfect. Nothing was overdone, just simple, honest and clean flavors. Something you can only pull of when you are using the best possible product like these guys. The wine list was really neat and most definately one of the fairest in town. I was surprised to see some of the usuall high-end suspects on that last for 1/2 the price of what most people charge. The cocktail list was very good but a little too out there for me, but I happen to be a bourbon rocks kinda guy. The service was very good. It certainly wasn't fine dining but everyone there was nice and attentive. The space was so warm and inviting and I can't wait for the weather to warm up so they can keep the awning open all night long. The music was hip and funky but not so loud you couldn't talk without having to lean in, something which I hate. Overall, I'd say its going to be a regular haunt of mine. If you haven't been at all, or haven't been since their rebirth, you're missing out.
