Once Great Restaurant Now Great Place To Avoid. This is very sad. The Star House used to be among the most highly recommended Chinese food eateries in San Diego County; judging by my experience today, that's no longer the case.

I ordered a curried chicken dish with an egg roll and fried rice; I'm finding it difficult to find the words to describe it.

The whole meal was tainted with some kind of off-flavor, I can't place it.

Perhaps it was spoiled meat; or maybe they got a bad batch of oil. I suppose it could have been that the meat was of some species other than chicken.

The only things I only know with any certainty is that I've never experienced a flavor so awful, and that I experienced nausea up after tasting the egg roll, some rice, and some curried chicken.

I hoped it was just a terrible one-time experience, but the staff convinced me: this restaurant has become a poor choice for dining.

After I informed them of the problem, they offered to make another plate- as though even if I still had an appetite, I'd be willing to risk throwing up a second time. They insisted on payment in full, even though the meal was uneaten.

There are plenty of hole-in-the-wall eateries of no great renown, some good and some bad; if this was one of those, I wouldn't bother writing this review. But this is a place that's received great acclaim. They have the articles and awards plastered all over their waiting area. Unfortunately, the restaurant that's covered in those articles is now a thing of the past.
