A curved green awning just across from Horton Plaza marks the entrance to the old boys club-style dining room with a long wooden bar, dark leather booths and brass accents. The City Hall and big business sets that fill the place with high powered dealings at lunchtime are replaced after hours with Downtown's cultured crowd who stop in for special pre- and post-theatre nibbles. The famous mussel bisque topped with a pastry crust leads the charge on the French bistro menu. At lunchtime, the fresh oysters and the "bar room burger" can only be topped by the salty smoked duck and arugula salad with sweet brandied cherries. In the evening, a unique "after theatre" menu features small plates like crab cakes with mustard sauce, grilled chicken breast and heirloom tomato and eggplant puree. Classic creme brulee and seasonal berries with Chantilly cream standout on the simple sweets menu.

I proposed to my wife in the downstairs booth, right by the bar 30 years ago, when this was still the Press Room. We now come by at least once a year when the Ice Rink is open at Horton Plaza and pig out on cheese, chardonney and the mussle bisque....we love the bar area as well and enjoy listening to the lawyer wanna-be's passing out business cards amonst each other, it's a gas! You are greeted by the owner and made to feel like family...and the food is worth the wait (but you usually don't have to wait long at all). Thanks for being part of a San Diego tradition! Anytime we are down by Horton Plaza it is a great place just for a drink or two (or more! HAHAHA).

Dobson's reminds me of an upscale English pub/bistro. It is very warm and friendly, but not at all stuffy. The staff are relaxed and friendly. Order the steaks here and you won't be disappointed.

As soon as you walk in, there are pictures of former Presidents who have eaten at the restaurant. I would recommend this A class restaurant to anyone. You must try their Mussel Bisque, its all you need to order.
