Editorial Review for Osteria Panevino – by Amy Eddo
In Short
The senses are ignited upon entering Osteria Panevino, where guests are greeted by rich, Italian aromas emanating from the rustic brick oven that is the dining room's focal point. Simple northern cuisine with a southern accent comprises the vast menu of pizzas, pastas and risottos served family-style in a casual atmosphere. Meaty favorites include the Tuscan grilled ribeye with roasted potatoes and vegetables or red wine braised ossobuco with saffron risotto.

While on a business trip to San Diego, we were walking around the gaslight district taking a look at the menus at all the restaurants lining the streets. We were walking by Panevinos when I saw a very Italian-looking gentleman eating a large plate of pasta and seafood. All I saw left was some angel hair pasta and the remnants of the lobster, mussels, etc. It looked wonderful, so that's how we happened to stop at this wonderful little gem. Thankfully there was a table for 2 available al fresco, and we immediately ordered a wonderful Chianti. The Pasta Fagioli was magnificent. The best I've ever tasted, and while I decided not enjoy the angel hair pasta and seafood platter, I did try the Orecchiette pasta with shrimp. That was enough for me to enjoy, and it was delicious. My companion did enjoy the angel hair and seafood and managed to eat the entire meal. While dessert would have been nice, we were both so full from our meals that we decided to walk off our dinner heading back to our hotel. I did have the opportunity to visit with a couple of Italian gentlemen though who indicated that they often came to this restaurant to get the taste of home. They told me that I couldn't get any better even if I was in Italy.
Pros: Delicious pasta and seafood combinations. Outside seating is the best.
Cons: Very busy and small.
