Editorial Review for Nicky Rotten's – by Erin Chambers
In Short
John Gotti and other Italian mobsters stand immortalized on the walls of the long, narrow bar with large windows that open to reveal seating on Fifth Avenue. Burgers and booze are served at the handful of tall tables, and Nick--aka Nicky Rotten--is always either at the door or behind the bar chatting up the regulars. The service and bar staffs could easily all be his cousins, as the vibe is unmistakably "in the family."

Insider Tips
Where to SitThe room upstairs in the back looks off-limits, but it's not. Mosey up for a cool bird's-eye view of the bar crowd below. A bonus: There's a fireplace with a flat-screen, too.
Fun FactNick the owner is a veteran of the Gaslamp scene, and has held management positions at Greystone and Osetra in the past.
Save MoneyThere is no cover charge, mostly-burger menu items hover below $10, and many are half price at happy hour.
When to GoThis is very much a "slash," as in bar/restaurant. At lunch, it feels like a restauarnt. After dark, it's the bar everyone stops into on their way to a club.

I recently heard about a new burger place in downtown sd and decided to give it a try.. I attended this establishment or I should say tried to on a sunday afternoon.. Padres were away so it was pretty dead.. My guest and I arive at the front and proceed to walk in and are stopped by a rude doorman saying that he needs to check ID's.. I said we are just here to eat not drink.. He then says that you need to be 21 to enter I said isn't this a resturant said yes and bar and that you can't go in if you are under 21.. I've never heard of a resturant not allowing people to enter because of age.. I can see if it was after 9 or 10 on a friday or saturday night but it was a sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock.. Why can't the waiters or bartenders check ID's like they do at every other restuarant in the world.. The doorman then proceeded to say we could take the food to go I'm like where are we supposed to eat it on the curb out front.. I will never go back to this place I don't even need to try the food because the staff will ruin the expirence before you even get the food.. for the brief minute I was there I looked inside and there was only about 4 people and 2 outside.. Also from the other people I talked to about this place they said I didn't miss out on anything and would choose in and out over their burgers.. So bassically their name lives up to their resturant nicky's roten is a roten restaurant.. Don't waste your time at this place!

I was in San Diego for 10 days on business and staying in the Manchester Grand Hyatt, which is an over priced stay in yuppie hell. I had tried to get a burger in a couple of places and they were horrible and $16.00 to boot! I finally met a cop on the beat named Dave and asked him where I could find a great hamburger, and man he was right. BTW Dave - Thanks! I finally got a great burger and was finally satisfied with a real meal. I highly recommend this place if you need a burger fix. Mind you, it is a huge burger and will make you feel like you swallowed a bowling ball, but that is the point, right? So, if you get a chance, stop here and pig out. As for the atmosphere it was nice, the staff were nice and attentive. The music was a tad loud 80's rock & pop, it could make a coversation a bit difficult.
Pros: Burgers, Fries, Beer
Cons: none
