Editorial Review for Sister Pee Wee's Soul Food – by Maren Dougherty
In Short
One of few soul food spots in San Diego, this restaurant in Grant Hill caters to mostly regulars-people who don't care what's being served, but they sit on stools at the red counter and enjoy whatever food is given to them. Everyday, Sister Pee Wee writes the menu on a board outside the restaurant; catfish, BBQ ribs, cornbread, black-eyed peas and yams are some foods that have been in the rotation.

I went here for dinner on Friday night, and it was an amazing experience. The Sister cooks up down-home style soul food, and after your food has arrived, don't be surprised if she sits down and chats you up while you're eating. The menu changes daily, based on what she decides to cook that day. The portions are very generous in size and reasonably priced, so be hungry when you get there or prepared to take home leftovers. Not a place for large groups, as there's only one serving counter and no tables. I highly recommend this unique dining experience, particularly for those who like to veer from the beaten path.
Pros: Great food cooked down-home style
Cons: Not for large groups
