Decadence to share. On the recommendation of a co-worker, I stopped in at Extraordinary Desserts after a relaxing weekend in SD. Truthfully, we drove by on Sunday night and the line was still out the door...so Monday morning it was. As we were leaving town, I ordered a mix of five desserts to enjoy at home. Needless to say, the lemon tart didn't even make it to the on-ramp of the 5 freeway. It was wonderfully tart and refreshing. I've loaded pics of the other items we brought home and all look delectable. I can tell you the prices might make you gasp out loud, but when you realize most desserts can easily serve two, you'll give a sigh of relieve. The staff was extremely friendly and patient with my indecision...something I'm sure they're used to, actually. The woman who helped me this morning even named her favorite, so I added it to my "to go" box of goodies. I definitely will make a stop in when we're in SD next...I'll need to try that lemon brulee I saw in the display...and maybe a nice salad & cup of tea.

I <3 Extraordinary desserts. Extraordinary Desserts makes me wish I lived in San Diego. the menu is ever changing with inventive desserts from lemon creme brulee to fruit tarts. Everything is decadent and takes you to Paris. The owner Karen also teaches classes "kitchen secrets" to a select few on the email distribution list. I will make special trips to SD to go here & it is a requirement if i happen to be in SD! The decor is open & urban like a loft with a long bar. They have a large variety of teas & now have a large retail counter to buy some of the special hard to find products to take home. Its by the gas lamp district so there is always a great corwd. Although if you go on a saturday night, you may need to wait 45m for a table, yes for dessert.

Excellent Cheese and Wine, Amazing Desserts!. I've been to the Union St. location about 1,000 times and always have a consistently positive experience. From large birthday gatherings to coffee with a friend to happy hour after work - I have never been disappointed. Their desserts are their namesake - and are truly Extraordinary in taste and presentation. However, their wine and cheese selection is excellent, as are their appetizers - interesting flavor combinations. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful, although some do come with a little attitude to match the modern Asian-inspired decor. But hey, it's not TGI Fridays, right? They are always accommodating - even when I brought my baby and she was fussing, the waitress offered to package our entire dinner and desserts AND wine to go in these adorable packages.

Recommendations: Viking Cake paired with Kona Coffee or a glass of Pinot

my favorite place for kona coffee with dessert. i love the union street location best. love the modern decor.

i go for one of two reasons:

1. i have a sweet-tooth -- which means i get kona coffee just for myself and one crazy large delicious dessert.

2. i have my savory-tooth -- which means i must have their grilled cheese sandwich with sundried tomatoes and green olive tapenade with either soup or salad.

MMMMMmmmmm.....

Terrible Service. I'm hoping that we went on a terrible night, but it was definitely overcrowded. You could not view the dessert selection. There wasn't much to view since the cases were practically empty. I was overcharged by $70plus on my credit card, which I'm waiting for a refund and a return call since our visit was 3 nights ago. I usually love going here, but the night I took some guests was not pleasant. It took over an hour for our desserts to get to the table, on top of that, we placed a sandwich order, that the waiter did not have down, so we told him to forget about re-ordering it.

If you must eat overpriced dessert, then go in the afternoon when the place is practically empty.

YUMMY!!. The dessert was great and SO pretty! Almost too pretty to eat. There was a large selection to choose from. I live 2 hours away and every time I'm in the area, I make it part of my plans to eat dessert here.

The only downside to this place is its pricey and busy busy busy!!

Editorial Review by Erin Chambers. The downtown location of the chic, desserts-only gem is larger and more urban than the Balboa Park outpost.

Underwhelmed. Although this is one of two locations, this location being just north of Downtown in Little Italy, is the most popular of the two. And althought the food is more then exquised, my visits to the location found something lacking.

I personally go for the coffee, which is %100 Kona bean, as opposed to a Kona and Arabian Bean blend. This coffee is arguably as good as that you get in Hawaii. Furthermore, the desserts are what the place is named for, and what one should go for. The vast majority of the dishes are well made, well decoraded, and top notch. Of course, as with all food items, there are some that miss their mark.

But for all the great food . . . the service is done without a smile . . . in a manor that gives great discredit to the food and ambiance. So take it to go.
