Stay away!. We made reservations because it was my wifes birthday. My wife, her grandparents and I arrived at our time, but the hostess was no where to be seen. Eventually a guy carrying water passed by and I was able to get his attention. He went off to find the hostess, which was in the back I'm guessing because it took awhile to find her.

We were then seated in a table next to the entrance to the bar and between the path of the waitstaff. I then asked for an dinner I really wanted to try, but I was told the chef couldn't make it without capers because the sauce is pre-made with them in it and cannot be removed. So I had to order something else.

My wife ordered the lasagna and the sauce was more of a pink water then a tomato sauce. Plus, the lasagna was drowned with spinach. The other meals were alright, but not worth the price.

After the meal the waiter insisted that my wife have a desert on the house because it was her birthday. She settled on the the tiramisu, which was dry. But thats not the worst part of it. The worst part was that the lever from the lighter he used to light her candle must have broken off, because it was on top of the desert. She noticed it when she blew out her candle.

After paying the bill we left, but on the way out the hostess was chatting up her boyfriend, or husband on the phone and just gave a half hearted "thanks" as we left. Barely lifting her head away from the phone to say it.

I will not go back to this place. If I'm going to throw hard earned money down on food, it better be worth it, and this place is not.

Best Italian in San Diego. This is my favorite Italian restaurant in San Diego. The food is always delicious, and the atmosphere is charming. I've taken multiple relatives and friends there, and everyone always loves it.

Editorial Review by Maren Dougherty, Citysearch Contributor. Treasured Hillcrest trattoria has the same rich Sicilian pasta, chicken and veal entrees that started the Busalacchi family food dynasty.
