Tips for Sushi Itto

Trying to hard and overpriced!. My husband and I just moved to SD and are (STILL) looking for a good value for sushi. We live in downtown and decided to walk around and look for sushi as we were craving it. We passed by Sushi Itto once, looked at the menu and thought "HOLY SMOKES" that's pricey... over 5 bucks for two pieces of sushi? We promptly left but after combing the streets, we thought we would give it a try anyway. Bad move.

We walked in and were promptly seated. When the menu's were handed to us, we noticed that the selection wasn't really all that great, especially in the Sashimi department. Note that there is "thin" sashimi and "thick" sashimi. Uh, well, I ordered twelve pieces of yellow tail (not that there was much choice) and let me tell you what thin is. Think tissue paper. If the plate were another color underneath other than white, it would have shown through. Trust me. My guess is that the thick Sashimi (about 20 bucks for 12 slices) is somewhat what one would expect - normal slices. Although, not sure about there. My stark, paper thin slices cost about 12 dollars.

We were not given soy sauce dishes which I thought was weird (note that another poster said the same thing)

My husband had the Rainbow Roll and 2 pieces of salmon sushi - Plus one draft Asahi. We both had Miso soup (way too salty) which cost $2.50 each. Sorry, it's miso soup... 1.50 maybe but 2.50 each? Really? I had water.

The bill came to 45 bucks without tip. Also we weren't there too long and we both smelled like the restaurant - like one big Tempura Shrimp (airing my clothes out as I type this)

I can't recommend another place for sushi but I can recommend that you skip this place if you want to actually feel full in your tummy and less empty in your wallet when you leave.

Worst Service Ever!. Don't waste your time or stomach. This place is the worst. I spent over 45 minutes waiting for food to go.

I decided to go here because it was close to Scripps Mercy Hospital. My son was in the hospital and I wanted to give him some good food instead of hospital food. Well, I could say that Sushi Itto's food is worse than the hospital's cafeteria. I ordered edamame beans and they overcooked it! Dry soybeans! Yuck.

Go to Nami Sushi up the street. They even offer Happy Hour items!

Don't waste your time. Go to Kiyo's up the street instead.. I love sushi and have tried many of the sushi restaurants in the Gaslamp and Sushi Itto is the worst! The rolls are embarrassing when served, they have no fish inside, I don't know how they serve them with a straight face. The rice is gummy and basically all you get since they don't put filling in your roll. The service is poor and that is being nice. The only good thing is the location, but if you walk 1 1/2 blocks up you can go to Kiyo's and get great service and food.

They don't care, why should we?. Service was friendly but incompetent -- no checking to refill water, didn't notice that I didn't eat 40% of my sushi because it was so gummy (rice in all the sushi and the salmon skin was particularly bad -- cold and as if it had been prepared hours earlier).

Not terribly expensive, but not cheap either and there are many other options. No thanks.

Poor customer service. Went to Sushi Itto for the first time and was promptly seated at the sushi bar (restaurant was empty). I ordered the Sake Bomb Combo, which was part of the limited Happy Hour menu. Price on HH menu was $4.50. I looked in the normal menu and the Sake Bomb combo was $10 and included a small house sake and a Sapporo or Asahi. After ordering, I was told that the HH Sake Bomb combo included a domestic beer only, not Sapporo or Asahi. The HH menu is obviously misleading. Strike one. I ordered edamame and it came out in one bowl (they did not give a second bowl to discard the used edamame pods)...strike two. I ordered a Rainbow Roll and noticed that it was served without Octopus, as stated on the menu. I requested the Octopus and received two small slices...not on a roll...strike three. We were not given soy sauce bowls and had to request them...strike four. We ordered one of the rolls on the happy hour menu, however were charged the normal price and had to ask for the bill to be adjusted...strike five. Our sushi chef was talking to two friends who were also sitting at the sushi bar, so our request for water went unnoticed...strike six. Needless to say the service at Sushi Itto was completely unacceptable and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Quick and casual sushi spot with a full bar attracts neighborhood diners on the go in Hillcrest.. In Short
Clean and simple describes both the look and the menu of this corner restaurant. No booths, just square tables on a shiny concrete floor and an open sushi bar define the space. A handful of outdoor tables are usually snapped up first on busy nights. The menu is an affordable list of all the favorite rolls and sides (edamame, miso), plus a few standout specials from the chef that change often.

We don't recommend this sushi. salmon sushi was fishy and warm, roll selection was poor, and the quality was low. Also, nearly every roll ingredient included cream cheese, and they use alot of imitation crab.
