Editorial Review for Bar Dynamite – by Maren Dougherty
In Short
Set in an area west of Hillcrest known as Middletown, the club occupies a secluded location and nightlife niche. With DJs spinning hip-hop, dance, pop and reggae tracks every night of the week, the red booths and dance floor are often packed. The small spot attracts a crowd that's higher on edge and lower on swank than Gaslamp clubs. Its remoteness makes bar-hopping a challenge, so plan to stay at Bar Dynamite all night long.

the girls and i were looking for a "below radar" club one fine friday evening. someone mentioned bar dynamite. we went to check it out. oh my god! i felt like i was at a homeless convention. the men in this bar actually smelled like they lived on the streets. not to mention what they were wearing. the bartender was so rude to us. all we ordered were beers and shots and he acted like we ordered foo foo blender drinks. you would think a bartender would want 4 pretty blondes at their bar. maybe this place is for homosexuals. who knows. the music was good but it was so loud that my ear drums tickled the whole time. we had to leave it was way too loud for such a tiny, tiny space. but mostly the people were old and very creepy for us 35-40 y.o. single gals.
Pros: music decent but way too loud
Cons: people smelly and scarey

I've been in SD for a while and I always considered Bar Dynamite to be a wild card. The music is generally always decent but the crowd is all over the place. I'm afraid that recently, I discovered that the crowd is just, how can I describe it - WEIRD. It's a combination of 40+-50 yr old people (do you like bumping into your 5th grade teacher?), some young adults, wanna-be thugs, etc. Basically, a single, young adult's worst nightmare. Tack on a 5 dollar cover charge and this place is now first on my "DO NOT GO HERE AT ALL COSTS" list. Go at your own peril!
Pros: Still a cool location and ambiance, decent music
Cons: crowd, crowd, crowd....yikes
