As good as it gets.
My son recently held his wedding on Shelter Island and we chose the Red Sails Inn to host our Rehearsal Dinner. We had eaten here a few times while making the arrangements and were very impressed with the meals, the service and the venue. All of the wedding guests were from out of town and many took our recommendation to dine here, repeatedly. On Thursday evening we had a walk in party of 22, asked for and received outside seating, and were served in an efficient manner by servers who did not seem to be the least bit distressed by the unannounced large party. Saturday night was our “planned” dinner. We had made the reservation for 20 – 25; the group grew to be in excess of 40 with almost no notice. Again, no problem, a second row of tables was set on the patio and we enjoyed the view and the cordiality of the Red Sails staff all evening.
Over the 5 days that we stayed on Shelter Island I became a regular customer of the Red Sails eating multiple breakfasts, lunches and dinners there. I found the meals to be consistently above average in quality and quantity and the choices and options far beyond what I am used to. The staff, both management and servers, were always pleasant, efficient and occasionally apologizing for service shortcomings that weren’t obvious to us. We live in a resort area of upstate New York; the Red Sails far exceeds what we consider the norm. We even enjoyed the bird population, their antics were amusing. Being ten feet from the ocean one must expect seagulls; I don’t think they can be trained to stay away. If the gulls, ducks and pigeons bother you – eat inside. There are ants at every picnic. The reviewers who voiced complaints perhaps need to get out more, they will discover what a treasure the Red Sails Inn really is.
My thanks to Bill, Julian and staff, your hospitality made our vacation so much better.

Editorial Review by Erin Chambers.
Locals are practically on the dock when eating on the back patio at this friendly Shelter Island breakfast spot on the harbor.
