Not bad, not fabulous, decent value. Saturday 10/24/09 for their Julia special. Hadn't been here for five years.

The food gets a solid "B". Not bad. My wife particularly enjoyed her fish. My boeuf bourguignon was OK -- the pearl onions had not been caramelized or cooked completely, and tasted sharply onion-y, and the meat had not braised sufficiently to be as tender as this dish should be.

Wine by the glass was acceptable and acceptably priced.

Our waiter resembled Chris Farley pretending to be a fancy French waiter. He did not pull it off. I found him distractingly pretentious.

The crowd .... well, I suppose I can't blame the restaurant for the crowd. Boisterous and well-lubricated. The loudest of them cleared out by 8:30 or so.

Be aware of the fake good reviews. The Cohn restaurant group (owner of Thee Bungalows) apprently has many "friends" who are willing to write them good reviews based on friendship. This practice will mislead consumers so please do not be fooled by this. There were the two good reviews posted recently from "Insider Page", as IP trace indicated they were comming from the same computer. There are more reviews like this as you read on. Most of them give Thee Bungalows 5-stars, which is totally false. The food quality of that restaurant is very bad, and the price is very high. It is a rip off place. As a matter of fact, the Cohn restaurant group is recently running TV ads to promote their restaurant. They are desperatly trying to find those who are willing to pay more for less.

Bad Food, Over-priced menu. I had to use another name in order to re-post my previous review, the review was removed by this site for no reason!

Ever since The Cohn restaurant group takeover, the restaurant is no longer the same. The restaurant always offer good services and use that to offset its bad food and over-priced menu. The so-called French restaurant has no French connection whatsoever and showed zero French culinary skills. The proclaimed extensive wine list was inherited from the previous owner Ed, now operate a wine shop across the street called The Third Corner. Thee Bungalow is not good. I would avoid this place at all cost until they get a better chef. Go to Taco Bell instead.

My nagative review was removed by this site. My previous negative review was removed by this site for no good reason. I begin to think whether this site has business connections with the Cohn restaurant group, the company who bought Thee Bongalow. It appears restaurant employees wrote good reviews for their own restaurant. Any serious negative reviews will be quietly removed by this site. Don’t be fooled by these good reviews, they are false and do not represent the truth.

not impressed. We went for restaurant week. We arrived ontime for our 8:45 reservation and were not sat until 9. Our first course which was soup or salad was not served until 9:30. The service was slow and averagely attentive. My friend said her duck was dry, my medium steak was bleeding. I did enjoy the lobster bisque and chocolate dessert although portions of both were small. In summation I would have enjoyed myself more if I went to 3rd corner wine bar across the street, and if I want to spend that much on a nice dinner I would choose a different place.

One of San Diego's culinary institutions endures with famous roast duck, award-winning wine list and classic fine dining ambiance.. The Scene
Walking into the cozy, dimly lit dining room today out on the point in OB is virtually the same experience as entering it 20 years ago. Custom wood cabinetry houses the non-cellar portion of the extensive wine collection, and white-clothed tables lay well-spaced throughout two main rooms. Local art in gold frames and menus from the restaurant's bygone eras don the walls. Servers move swiftly, but quietly in the carpeted dining room.

The Food
Thick and rich as always, this menu is fond of French classics but has also incorporated a few contemporary preparations. Standout starters include a cheesy stuffed ravioli and light, fluffy San Diego crab cakes. The succulent roast duck--a house specialty--comes with either a cherry reduction, orange sauce, or peppercorn demi glaze, while lighter dinner options include a bouillabaisse with fresh lobster, mussels and shrimp in a slightly spicy broth.

STILL ONE OF THE GREAT DINING SPOTS IN SAN DIEGO!!. I have been a patron of Thee Bungalow since late 60's. It has always been a place to go where you knew the food would be excellent and the wine choice would be outstanding, the atmosphere cozy and the service impeccable. The resaturant has never failed me at any time over the decades. There have been some lovely structural changes to add more seating, but the ambiance has remained cozy and intimate. I feared that when it was taken over by the Cohen's Restaurant Group that it might lose some of its former magic, but have to say that they have remained true to the Thee Bungalow's style. Maybe I'm nostalgic about it, but I feel that it still one of the best restaurants in San Diego. I have some great memories of many special dinners at Thee Bungalow. This is BY FAR the nicest restaurant in the OB neighborhood.

I have always enjoyed the duck with cherry sauce, and it remains one of my favorites. I have found it to always be moist and tasty and the cherry sauce to be sweet but appropriate with the duck.

Specialty of the House, Not so Special. Went to Thee Bungalow as a party of four and the only menu item that wasn't up to par was ironically their specialty - the duck. Although the dark meat was juicy and tasty, the breast was dry and the cherry sauce was too thick, sweet, and syrupy. The rest of us had great meals and the salmon was exceptional. Everything was fresh, nicely presented, and the waiter did nothing to make us feel unwanted when we presented a bottle of our own wine for a relatively minimal corkage fee of $15. Service overall was good - nothing outstanding, but nothing negative either.

Overall, we enjoyed our evening there. Are there better places in town to eat? Sure, but there's nothing wrong with this one.

I've always had a great experience. It's hard to believe these other reviewers had a bad time at Thee Bungalow. Iv'e been dining here for a number of years, tried just about the whole menu, and loved it all. I've never had a bad meal, although I will admit that I wouldn't recommend the duck. There's too many other good things to try. The waiters have always been very nice and helpful. My favorite part of the experience is the wine list. Maybe the biggest in San Diego, but more importantly the best priced! I definately recommend this restaurant, no matter what those others say. My favorite is the Osso or pepper steak, and the new crab cakes.

I agree with previous reviewer. Not impressed. In fact, I question who is writing these positive reviews and if they are real. Better restaurants in Point Loma are Old Venice, The Brigantine and Island Prime.
