Middletown lounge serves the hipster, underground set with midcentury moden design, small plates menu and retro-style, sunken bar.. In Short
When you can count the team behind the Casbah, The Turf Club and the Rugburns as your friends, you know you're in San Diego's "in crowd." Starlite adheres to the indie-hip vibe well, with a funky hexagonal entrance, dark wood paneling inside and a huge sunken bar that anchors the dining room. Bright white chairs and mid-century chandeliers complete the look. Order from the approachable small plates menu--the mixed fry, sausage board and Brandt burger are among the standouts--inside, or take your dinner out to the back patio. Drinks are serious business here, too. The bar contains many hard-to-find liquors and a respectable whiskey selection.

Magnificent Evening, Great Food, Time to Celebrate. My wife and I decided to visit the Starlite for our 42nd Anniversary dinner. What a great choice! We started with Mussels in a delicious tomatoe sauce and toasted our special day with a Champagne Sparkler for each. We followed with Arugula salads with fresh avacado and grapefruit slices: Zesty!

Then I moved on to a 8 oz. Prime Steak, prepared to perfection. My wife had the "deconstructed" Jidori Chicken with veggies and biscuit: ummm, ummm GOOD! Our server, Annie, was attentive and responsive, but not intrusive.

We finished with some well drinks to top off the evening: a totally wonderful hot buttered rum for me and a spectacular Starlite Sling (gin, cherry Heering, Benedictine, lime, pinapple and other goodies) for my wife.

We split a large slice of tasty Banana cake, so we wouldn't ruin our diets completely! But hey, it was time for celebration. Les les bon temps rollez, oui? Yes, in deed!
