My fiancee and I went to the Jukejoint Southern Kitchen for the first time today after reading a review here. After looking at the menu for Phil's bbq in Hilcrest (which is good), we decided that we wanted a more down-to-earth and wallet-friendly bbq experience. Enter Jukejoint. The the tenderness of the chicken and beef ribs was PERECT. Not to mention the creamy and somehow slightly smoky mac-n-cheese and the cornbread. The girl at the register opened the containers to show us our food and we both literally said "wow" outloud. Side bar: Make sure you have papertowels/napkins at home. It was quite special when we realized we had none. This bbq needs it- the sauce is GOOOOD. We asked for spicy, but don't be alarmed as it's not really spicy (by southern California standards). It just has some kick. The owner was there and was very friendly and knowlegeable about his business and the service is great. There was actually relaxed conversation between the patrons (about bbq, of course) during our (relatively short) wait for our order. We will be returning, not only for the bbq and service, but we saw Pecan Waffles and chicken on the menu (as well as Sweet Potato Cinnamon Rolls). They have a large menu ranging from breakfast, desserts, sandwiches, side dishes...This is a neighrborhood gem that should not be slept on.

Stopped in here for lunch last week to get some bbq which was excellent but I orederd the mac n cheese as my side item and was blown away. The mac n cheese is creamy and just how you would get it in the south, unlike anywhere I have ordered in San Diego. I have eaten bbq all around San Diego and most of the spots are mediocre at best but JukeJoint is a major player in the bbq circut in San Diego now with great food all around! I will definately be making my way back when I get a barbeque and mac n cheese craving.
