“The sushi was slightly disappointing, after all the raves this place has had in the past (and after having eaten at Sasabune in Honolulu last month).”

Definitely make reservations ahead of time. Even with reservations you can expect a wait, but you have to be there on time in order to get the table. However, the sushi is fantastic. I would definitely say that it is on par with great places I've been to in LA and New York, and among the best sushi I've had in the US. It doesn't quite compare with the sushi in Japan, but is not bad for the States. I would recommend the sashimi omakase, we once had that there and it came with a live lobster and lobster sashimi which is not even readily available in Japan. I would also recommend trying to get seated at the sushi bar. I usually get the chef's recommended sushi and sashimi, which is excellent.
Unpretentious sushi bar and Japanese restaurant in Mission Bay serves up some of the freshest seafood in town..
In Short
Tucked behind a strip mall convenience store, this Japanese eatery is one of the city's hidden finds. While the décor is minimalist and the dining area is tiny, it attracts a horde of regulars who stop in for daily specials and the latest creations from the catch of the day. Hamachi and the spicy dynamite roll are crowd favorites, but the menu also includes sea urchin, soft shell crab, teriyaki-glazed meats and tempura.
Best sushi in SD. You know this place is the best when it's standing room only and you can't get a reservation for the same day. And when you see this many Japanese people in one place, you know it's authentic, too. The spider rolls are awesome!
Good Sushi in SD.
You can't do much better in San Diego than this place for sushi. Angelenos may find the sushi here merely average compared to what you can find in LA, but for San Diego it is pretty good.
They do rolls well here. Daily recommended appetizers are usually fresh and tasty as well. The decor is rather hip. The service is good. Likely wait due to high popularity.
