Big Boys Babershop. On the corner of 4239 University Ave, you’ll find Big Boys Barbershop in City Heights. On a Sunday afternoon, there’s a line of about 5 guys. A couple of the men waiting are watching the football game on TV, while others are younger and are accompanied by their mothers. Big Boys Barbershop is run by the Nguyen family. Johnathan Nguyen is head of the helm this afternoon where the place is blasting Lil’ Wayne and showing the Vikings game on the tube. “It gets busy on the weekends,” explains Nguyen. Depending on the age, and hair type, a haircut will run you from $12 to $18. This Big Boys location in one of three San Diego, including one on Euclid and the other further south on University Avenue. The barbershop has a family-like atmosphere with an edge. And the barbers with killer tattoos on their arms are nice and welcoming, too.
