Editorial Review for Tavern on Jane – by Citysearch Staff

The Scene
This modest, friendly destination places a premium on food rarely found in casual neighborhood joints. The space itself, with brick walls, fireplace and long wooden bar, has a slightly New England feel to it. Service is always warm and relaxed, and if you show up more than a few times, count on the bartender knowing your name.

The Food
Inventive nightly specials complement a menu stocked with dependable basics: roast chicken with garlic mashed potatoes, mixed green salad with marinated grilled steak, a variety of pastas and a worthy hamburger. The classics exhibit thoughtful touches as well: The grilled chicken club is enlivened with roasted red-pepper mayonnaise and arugula, and comes with homemade fries and coleslaw.

User Reviews for Tavern on Jane

2 Star Rating: Below Average

Time for a recent review on this once terrific place. Lower quality food, barkeeps, cleanliness, and clientèle make me wonder if it's under new management. If you must drop in, grab a table way in back, away from Baby Carriage Central. Steer clear of the over-priced, over-cooked nightly 'specials' in favor of a basic burger, club sandwich, or chopped salad. With so many other new dining options in the neighborhood, I can't understand why Tavern on Jane let itself go so.

Pros: Kid-friendly; good sandwiches/burgers

Cons: Noisey; messy; rude bartender

I have lived in the West Village all my life. I used to think the Corner Bistro was the best burger in town. I was wrong. The Tavern's burger kicks the Bistro's A*s! The Chickory salad is 1st class too. Go here for good "grub" any day of the week.

Pros: Great Food

Cons: Awkward tabling and sporadic service
