Towe R 2 0 I I PaThe saying “less is more” doesn’t apply to West oast IPA’s. In brewing this hoppy offering, we took the best of Tower 10 IPA & added more. An abundance of highalpha Centennial hops give T20 its resinous pine-like bitterness, while oregon-grown crystals & Chinooks lend zesty grapefruit & tangerine hop flavors
Tower 20 IPAStats: 9.5% ABV – 9 SRM – 100 IBU An abundance of high-alpha Centennial hops give T20 its resinous pine-like bitterness, while Oregon-grown Crystals & Chinooks lend zesty grapefruit & tangerine hop flavors.
Boardwalk Black RyeStats: 8.0% ABV – 80 SRM - 80 IBU A spicy black ale w/ a hop profile that’s pure West Coast. Black & caramelized rye malts add complex spicy & roasted notes, while three massive additions of Crystal hops provide the vibrant floral aroma & citrus hop character of a Double IPA.
Pintail Pale AleStats: 5.3% ABV - 15 SRM - 47 IBU An American Pale Ale brewed w/ Cascade & Motueka hops for a vibrant floral aroma & crisp citrus hop character. Caramel malts provide balance, rounding out its dry refreshing finish.
Tower 10 IPATower 10 IPA boasts hops from beginning to end, & everywhere in between. We fill the brew kettle to the brim w/ assertive Chinook hops, giving the beer its intense grapefruit & pine flavors that linger through its dry finish. After fermentation, we dry hop w/ a blend of Cascade & Centennial hops for a floral citrus aroma. A touch of lightly kilned caramel malts make Tower 10 a well balanced, full flavored IPA. Mission Beach, the late 1980s. Amid a sea of neon bikinis, Tower 10 marked the spot where two college grads & a 75 year-old master brewer drew up plans for the first local craft brewery in San Diego since Prohibition. Named in honor of our first good idea, Tower 10 IPA is brewed to inspire the next one.
Red Trolley AleRed Trolley Ale is a medium-bodied beer w/ heavyweight malts. We brew it w/ a half ton of caramelized malts for a rich copper color & toffee flavor. After adding the perfect mix of hops for balance, we warm ferment the beer to bring out a hint of dried raisins & currants. The complexity of flavors makes Red Trolley Ale a hearty & truly enjoyable beer. Back in the day, we brewed Red Trolley Ale as our first holiday beer. In the spirit of the season, we made like Santa in a fat suit & stuffed it full of caramel malts. So many folks got on board that we decided to brew it year round. Years later, Red Trolley Ale remains the perfect beer to make any occasion festive.
Amber LagerIn the beginning… we created Karl Strauss Amber Lager. Generous amounts of caramel & Munich malts give the beer rich caramel flavors, balanced by a background of Cascade hops. After the beer is cold fermented for a clean, smooth finish, we filter it - not once, but twice- to enhance its bright, bronze color. Our flagship Amber Lager was also Karl’s favorite beer. Born & raised in his father’s brewery, Karl spent his life making beer. His work was inspired by a simple truth: life was meant to be enjoyed, preferably w/ good friends & good beer. That’s why every keg that comes out of our brewery is stamped w/ his name. It’s a reminder of why we do what we do.
Woodie GoldWoodie Gold is a nod to a classic European lager. We use noble Saaz hops for the spicy floral aroma & soft hop bitterness true to authentic Czech pilsners. A base of bread-like malt flavors from the finest pale barley provide a delicate balance. Softening techniques to duplicate the water found in the Bohemian countryside & cold conditioning give Woodie Gold its crisp refreshing taste. It might have been around the campfire during the road trip down to Baja. Or maybe it was in the lodge after a powder day up at Mammoth. Wherever it was, we realized the need for a beer that tastes good at any elevation. Enter Woodie Gold, the ideal beer wingman for the adventurous Southern California spirit.
Endless Summer LightEndless Summer Light tastes refreshing whether you like putting your toes to the nose or just in the sand. A blend of Vienna malts & pale barley give this flavorful low-calorie lager a firm malt center & golden color. Noble Saaz hops provide a subtle hop character & crisp clean finish. In June of 2005, Bruce Brown Films & Karl Strauss Brewing Company came together to create Endless Summer Light as a tribute to two pioneers, Bruce Brown, legendary filmmaker & creator of the classic surf film, “The Endless Summer,” & Karl Strauss, Master Brewer.
Windansea WheatThere are wheat beers that need dressing up, & there are those that don’t. Windansea Wheat is the latter. We brew our Hefeweizen true to the Bavarian style, using 50% malted wheat & Noble Tettnanger hops. A centuries old strain of German weissbier yeast lends its trademark banana & clove flavors that linger through a refreshingly smooth finish. Save the citrus wedge for a beer in need, you’ll thank us.
OktoberfestWe brew Oktoberfest in tribute to the world’s biggest beer party. Vienna & Munich malts produce the deep golden color, nutty undertones, & toasted malt flavors characteristic of this renowned Bavarian beer style. Perle hops imported directly from the Hallertau region of Germany give the beer a smooth balanced finish. This celebratory lager puts the ‘fest’ in the month of October. What started as a community celebration of a royal Bavarian wedding in 1810 has turned into a beer tradition like no other. Over 16 days each fall, some 6 million people head to Munich, don lederhosen & funny hats, gather in enormous tents, & drink oversized steins of beer. We brew this beer true to the original style so you can enjoy some Oktoberfest cheer from the other side of the planet.
Fullsuit Belgian Brown Ale (Winter Seasonal)Fullsuit is brewed w/ the changing seasons in mind. Firm toasted malt & roasted nut flavors are underpinned by a hint of vanilla that comes from aging the beer on French oak. Belgian ale yeast adds a peppery, fruity character to the beer’s slightly dry & warming finish, making it perfect for the (kind of) cold Southern California winter. A quality session this time of year calls for a Fullsuit. The frigid North Pacific Current rolls in, generating first-class swells & mild hypothermia. While a few brave souls zip up & paddle out w/ no hesitation, most of us stay on dry land & salute their commitment w/ a winter warmer of a different kind.
Pintail Pale Ale (Spring Seasonal)As far as hops go, Pintail Pale Ale offers the best of both hemispheres. Motueka hops from New Zealand’s South Island provide a vibrant tropical aroma, while multiple additions of American-grown Cascades lend zesty citrus hop flavors. Finishing crisp & dry, it’s the perfect session beer for hop heads. When you spot a pintail headed towards the beach, odds are the surf is way up. And where this board provides balance on big waves, Pintail Pale Ale brings balance to big hops. We wanted to brew a session beer w/ huge hop flavors, so we created Pintail – a dry-hopped pale ale from the West Coast.
Karl’s Coastal Reserve
Big Barrel Double IPAWhen we kicked-off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows & expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior & Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.
Whistler Imperial PilsThe piercing howl of the SD#1 Whistler Buoy echoes for miles, hailing ships of rocky shores ahead. Like its namesake, Whistler Imperial Pils warns & welcomes at the same time. The grassy & floral bitterness of Saaz hops warns this is no ordinary pilsner, while authentic Moravian malts provide a toasted malt balance that welcomes another sip. Finishing crisp & dry, this addition to the Coastal Reserve Series is right at home in America’s finest beer city.
Blackball Belgian IPAWhen checkered blackball flags dot the California coastline, experienced surfers migrate to advanced breaks where strangers to the sport dare not. Blackball is a Belgian-inspired India Pale Ale w/ a robust West Coast hop profile. Belgian ale yeast, coriander, & Curacao lend a fruity & spicy character for an ale bolder than your average IPA. A blend of New Zealand & Cascade hops add a vibrant floral aroma & clean citrus hop bitterness that lingers through its crisp, dry finish. Drink up while it’s young, heavily hopped IPA’s are best enjoyed fresh.
Boardwalk Black Rye IPAWhen the sun goes down past Crystal Pier, the postcard view of the Pacific fades into the dark. As the tourists head off down the Boardwalk, a distinctly local vibe returns to PB. Boardwalk Black Rye IPA is a spicy black ale w/ a hop profile that’s pure West Coast. Black & caramelized rye malts add complex spicy & roasted notes, while three massive additions of Ahtanum hops provide the vibrant floral aroma & citrus hop character of a Double IPA. Keep Boardwalk out of the cellar, this hoppy offering is best enjoyed fresh.

21st AnniversaryNow that we are 21, our palate has matured like a fine wine. So we created something unique w/ old vine Zinfandel grape juice added during fermentation to give this brew a subtle vinous quality. Belgian yeast imparts hints of dried fruit in the nose, while a big dose of Vienna & Caramel malts yields a dry warming finish. Aged a month on American oak to take the edge off, this is one to share w/ friends.
22nd AnniversaryWhen we opened in 1989, the most adventurous beer in town was our Downtown After Dark Brown Ale. Our 22nd Anniversary Stout is a tribute to our roots & to those that dared to dream big in San Diego. Brewed w/ vanilla beans & aged three months in American oak bourbon barrels, this complex Imperial Stout has layers. Nuances of dark chocolate & espresso flavors are underpinned by hints of vanilla, bourbon, & oak. Save a bottle. Like us, this Special Release gets better w/ age.
23rd AnniversaryWhen we started brewing back in 1989, the closest thing in town to an English-style Old Ale came in a paper bag. Twenty-three years later, we like to think we had something to do w/ improving the local beer selection in San Diego. Our 23rd Anniversary Old Ale is indeed “old ale,” after spending a full year in American oak bourbon barrels. The result is an unblended & unmistakably complex strong ale w/ rich layers of toffee, molasses, dried figs, warming bourbon, & toasted oak. Save a bottle. Like us, this one gets better w/ age.
Imp. Maltball Stout ’08
To The 9’s ’092009 Holiday Ale …and what a year it was. 20 years of beer was celebrated, a new bottling line came to life. In honor of ’09, we brewed a beer w/ English Extra-Pale malts & no less than 9 hop varieties to give it 99 IBUs, 9.9% ABV 9 SRM. This Imperial IPA has a woodsy, floral hoppiness w/ citrus undertones & a spicy, earthy aroma. Full in body & spirit, it’s the perfect beer to take leave of the old year in style & welcome the New Year dressed to the nines.
Parrot In A Palm Tree ’10 (Holiday Ale 2010)In San Diego, we’re not known for our partridges or pears but we can all relate to those noisy parrots & their relentless “caroling”. Parrot in a Palm Tree is a robust Baltic Porter brewed especially for the Holidays. Aged two months in San Pasqual Tawny Port barrels, the resulting brew isn’t for the birds. This winter warmer boasts a complex bouquet of dark fruits, espresso & chocolate, w/ hints of oak in its warming finish. Raise a glass to 2010 or save a bottle as this limited release will age w/ the best of them.
Two Tortugas ’11 (Holiday Ale 2011)San Diego may not top the list for birdwatchers but it certainly tops the list for beer-drinkers. And while you’re more likely to spot a Sea Turtle than a Turtle Dove, tracking down a world class beer is easy. Two Tortugas is the 2nd addition to our less than literal “Twelve Days” series of holiday ales. This Belgian-inspired Quadruple Ale has a delicate union of toffee, dark fruits, & warming spices that will continue to develop w/ age. Raise a glass to 2011 or save a bottle for 2021, this turtle’s got legs.
