Hodad's = Good Grub
by The Good Grub at Citysearch
t's pretty simple, really. A place with a sign "Under 99 billion Served" has to be pretty badass. We'll if you're lucky enough to see the sign (ace of base reference intended), you're in a magical place called Hodad's. Put simply, the burgers here might just be the most satisfying thing you've ever eaten. With a patty of bacon almost as big as the burger, the Hodad Bacon Cheeseburger is not to be passed up. Add to it an order of "Frings" (a basket of half fries and half uber beer battered onion rings) and a Dr. Pepper (so it's not beer, but it goes pretty damn good with a bacon cheeseburger) and you're good to go. Seriously, don't mess with it. It's amazing. Add to the great food a just general cool vibe ... cue the license plates on the wall, a random drifter or two outside viciously playing air-guitar (come on, it's Ocean Beach), and a $100 all you can eat offer on the menu. This might be the time to note that the burgers are like 6 bucks... but damn, it's still tempting. So head on down to the corner of Newport and Bacon (I couldn't have made that up if I wanted to) and bow down to the holiest of bacon cheeseburgers. All hail Hodad's, creator of some serious Good Grub. See more at www.thegoodgrub.weebly. com
- Pros: Grubalicious
- Cons: Nada

I use to live in san diego for 5 years and spent a lot of time in ocean beach. I wasn't into the resturant scene until my girlfriend and I came back to san diego for the chargers raiders game. She said let's go to hodads in ob and I had the best double bacon cheese burger ever. This place has been on the tv series diners drive inns and dives. ***** starz to the owner and employees. I wish I cld have spent those 5 years there. Thank you
Best burgers on West Coast.

You know somethings good if there is a line to get in and you can smell the food all the way down the beach. Hodads is the best place for burgers in Cali. They dont let you leave hungry thats for sure. We flew 2000 miles for this place I highly recommend it!!!!!!!!!
- Pros: huge portions, on the beach, crazy atmosphere
- Cons: pepsi
Great Burgers in a Hole-in-the-Wall
by THill at Citysearch
Hodad's is what everyone says it is: awesome burger joint by the beach. Always packed. Loud and crazy.
I wouldn't go here on a first date, job interview, or anything like that... because it is run-down, maybe a little too laid-back, and very much a "beach bum" hang-out.
But if you don't mind the run-down atmosphere--I personally enjoyed it--then you can't beat their gigantic, delicious burgers and fries.
The employees are hit-and-miss. I was both appalled and delighted by different employees in the same visit.
Prices are what you would expect from a burger joint in Southern California. Somewhere between Denny's and Outback.
I'll always bring people that come to town to visit here. Recommended.
- Pros: Good food, cool atmosphere, by the beach
- Cons: Rude service, hole-in-the-wall
Great burgers, cool so cal vibe

We sat at the bar since it was the only place to sit in the whole restaurant. After walking by a few times and seeing a line out the door, we felt lucky to get the bar! The bar tender was very prompt and friendly. I ordered a single cheeseburger that was awesome. I wish I knew the mini burgers (I think that?s what they are called) aren?t sliders ? they are just normal size burgers. The regular burgers (like what I ordered) are huge! Next time I will get a mini. Overall, I?d recommend this place for a casual meal if you don?t mind the potential wait.
- Pros: burgers are very good
- Cons: there might be a wait
Hope you have a big appetite

We went down here on a Saturday and were there when it opened at 11, by 11:15, there was a wait. This is an indication that people love this place. Huge burgers, great frings (fries/onion rings combo) ... great service, very friendly and prompt ... .thought about getting a double, very glad to have ordered a single cheeseburger. Wish I could have remembered to get a shake instead of a soda, but that will be rectified on our next visit. Awesome atmosphere, lots to read and watch while you wait for your order. We took a long walk on the pier afterwards to work some of this off. One of the best burgers I have ever had, and my husband agrees
- Pros: Portions, service, quality of food
- Cons: None
Best Burgers in San Diego
by jomarkumar423 at Citysearch
Make sure you come hungry, because this place will be sure to feed you. The burgers here are HUGE. I thought about getting a double, but I'm glad I got the single. The fries are excellent, and the shakes are outstanding! Whenever we have people visit us from out of town, we like to take them here. It's a nice hole in the wall, with a very chill atmosphere. It gets pretty busy in the evening, but it's worth the wait. Don't miss this one.
- Pros: great value, awesome burgers, delicious shakes
- Cons: can be a bit crowded
Great hole in the wall relaxing joint

I was craving a good burger and shake, and I got more! I didn't know what to expect while I was driving out there. There's a few other items other than just burgers, shakes and fries; but not much else....but you don't really need anything else. I liked the simplicity. It was a nice day out, and nothing sounded better than a cheeseburger and a malt. The shake was made with real ice cream, but unfortunately they only had the 3 basic flavors: chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. I got mine "malted", but it was so thick/sweet, I couldn't finish more than half! Or maybe that's because I was too busy stuffing their super jucy awesome burger in my face! Their fries were just as good; super crispy, with a little bit of seasoning fried in. So good!! The atmosphere was the best part. It was very low key. The only decorations were all kinds of license plates from every state, and even other countries hung EVERYWHERE! The people working there were 'punk' looking, but very friendly. They'll sit down with you to take your order. If you're lucky, you might even get a seat in the car! ;)
- Pros: Quick food, great shops around, close to ocean
- Cons: only 2 hour or 15 minute parking on the street.
Best Burger Joint in Town
by rkreisler at Citysearch
I've sampled many a burger in San Diego, and I would have to say Hodad's is the best in town. The wait staff looks rough around the edges, but they're all sweethearts and provide quick service with no less than a smile. The burgers are consistently delicious, the fries are always hot and crisp, and their milkshakes are the real thing! Perfect after a day on the beach, or a laid-back night. Sit at the bar stools facing the street and you'll be in for some great people-watching.
It is a must to take out-of-town visitors to this burger joint. Anyone we've ever taken there wants to go back whenever they visit!
- Pros: Great service, consistently great food and beer for cheap, fun atmosphere, a piece of San Diego culture you've got to experience.
- Cons: Gets crowded, especially during the summer, but the line does move quickly.
It's all about the burger!

Hodads is a great place to go if you are looking for a good burger, beer, and fries. After all, it should be about the food, right? Or do you want the price for table linens, and unpleasant waiters added to your burger order?
- Pros: Food
- Cons: Crowded
