Best Steaks Ever!!

by tchurch1981 at Citysearch

My boyfriend and I love this place. We live in Los Angeles and both times we have gone to San Diego we went here. The steaks and fresh seafood are amazing. We had the oysters and shrimp cocktail for an appetizer and they are some of the best I have ever tasted. Steaks and scalloped potatoes for our entree were a devine choice. The only sad thing is that we don't live in San Diego to get to enjoy this place more often.

Lunch was OK, but I've had better

by simplybp at Citysearch

Went to Lou and Mickeys for lunch today... wanted to eat inside, and was seated in the bar because the restaurant was "full" (although we could see what looked like 100 empty seats - I translated it into "we didn't staff for inside eating today"). Ordered the Garlic Meatloaf Sandwich, and my partner ordered a cheeseburger. Both were large sandwiches, with large piles of french fries. My meatloaf had but one taste: Garlic. So it was appropriately named. It also had the consistency of Alpo. I prefer my meatloaf a lot less mushy... actually firm, in fact. So that was a major turnoff to me. And then the fries.. they were those little skinny fries, slightly overdone, slightly cold. Sort of like those ones that come in the can at the grocery store. If you like those, you'll like Lou and Mickeys. I didn't - I really prefer hot steak fries, the total opposite end of the french fry spectrum. My friend's burger looked better, but she deserted all her fries as well.

Lunch for 2, no alcohol, $35 with tip.

  • Pros: nice interior, decent service, large lunch menu
  • Cons: lacking food taste and quality (to my liking)

Food good but poor/dangerous customer service

by lindaq2 at Citysearch

My husband, mother and I recently dined there for her birthday. The restaurant is lovely, with dark wood and homey feel. Husband ordered a huge steak that was cooked as he wanted. My mom and I split the filet and lobster tail. It was wonderful until.....we ordered cheesecake for dessert. It came with the chocolate sauce we wanted, but the plate was decorated with a rasberry sauce which I am ALLERGIC to. The waitress took it back and brought what we thought was a new slice. WRONG! The slice had been moved from the offending plate to a new one, WITH THE SAUCE STILL ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CHEESECAKE. We did not find that out until I had already had 5 bites and consumed the rasberry sauce. I was feelin itchy and started to get red blotches (I took a benidryl immediately) when we called the waitress back and told her what happened. She brought the manager, Mr. Ridge over and he went into the kitchen to investigate. While that was happening I was getting more blotches on my arms and my scalp was itching like crazy. The Manager erturned and said there was not rasberry but strawberry sauce. HOOEY. He gave us his card and said to "call him" if anything got bad. It was already bad, I was reacting to the rasberry sauce and he made me feel as if I was trying to scam him. The waitress apologized and we left promptly.

Besides the fact of the managers non-response to my reaction, ANYONE that is re-served food that is sent back is a crime. They are a dangerous place for sanitary and safety conditions. Be aware!

Great menu, fun atmosphere, excellent food

by ellenrdavis at Citysearch

I was a bit nervous after reading comments about service, but our experience was great. The waiter was very attentive but did not hover. We got the breaded mozzarella for an appetizer and it was just ok. Everything else, though, was great! The steaks had great flavor and the shrimp was really good. We also got sauteed mushrooms and garlic mashed potatoes as a side and the portions were huge--definitely enough for 3-4 people to share. The creme brulee for dessert was fantastic. I'd recommend this place anytime!

The only downside was that a party near us was a bit loud, but the atmosphere is boisterous so it wasn't terribly distracting. If you're in the mood for a nice, quiet dinner, you might want to go somewhere else.

  • Pros: Great food, fun atmosphere
  • Cons: Noise (if that bothers you)

Nice steak and seafood near the ballpark

by paule123 at Citysearch

Our party of 6 were promptly seated on a Tuesday night (no reservation). The restaurant was fairly busy given a convention in town and a ballgame that night. The menu is really geared toward steaks and seafood, not so much Italian fare. A number of us ordered the filet mignon and we were all quite pleased. I thought the sides for two were a bit smallish compared to other upscale steakhouses that provide sides "family style." The waitress was friendly and attentive. The crowd ranges from Padres gear casual to suit & tie business dinner. There's also a large patio that would have been pleasant on a warm night. Conveniently located close to the convention center and ball park, and service and food quality exceeds that of the many overrated Gaslamp tourist traps I try to avoid. Will definitely return on my next trip to SD.

  • Pros: Convention/ball park location, ambience

Good food, can't say the same for the service

by valpet76 at Citysearch

I have been to Lou and Mickey?s several times, but this last visit has compelled me to share my experience. Undeniably the food is good there, I have never been disappointed with an item on the menu. That said, food is only one component of the dining experience.

My father was in town for a conference, and stole away from the events to have dinner with us one evening. I chose Lou and Mickey?s because I knew the food was good, and with my fathers visits so rare, I wanted to have the experience be a nice one for him. While the food lived up to my previous experiences, the atmosphere and service were quite bad. The area we ate in was so loud, we literally could not carry on a conversation. The service has never been a strong suit in my opinion (only above average on a good day) but the service last night was lacking. We had to pour our own wine several times, our coffee came out incredibly late, far after we had finished our desert. I even had to flag a bus boy down to bring their attention to the situation. That aside, the service was slow, and basically inattentive.

While it was wonderful to see my father, I hate to say that I was apologizing when we left the restaurant. I had a few short hours with my father, and the conversation was mostly "what?" and "sorry".

Upscale surf and turf served indoors or on the patio with a tantalizing choice of exotic drinks and fine wines.

In Short
Located at the entrance to the Gaslamp Quarter, this upbeat restaurant offers premium steaks, seafood and pasta in a classic chophouse atmosphere. Popular appetizers include baked mozzarella in marinara sauce, oysters Rockefeller and jumbo crab cakes. Entrees range from filet mignon and crab leg combos to Colorado lamb chops and chicken piccata. Regulars also rave about the sliced tomato and onion salad topped with crumbled blue cheese. The must-have dessert is caramel apple cobbler for two.
