Hands down the best bar downtown

by LaceyM

This used to be downtown's hidden gem. Now Basic is all the rage but, it still does what it intended to do right- be a great bar where people can eat, drink and be merry. The bartenders make you feel like family so you never want to go anywhere else.

  • Pros: Hip

Pizza Pizza!

by RodgSDBoy

The pizza at Basic is very much what everyone says it is. Try anything on a white pie...soooo good. The bartender was super nice, made us superfruit mojitos with TY KU, which were bomb. And the mood of the place, although "basic" (haha), was really chill for a Sunday night. I've only been once, but I'm sure I'll be there again!

  • Pros: Who can say no to great pizza and booze?
  • Cons: Notta one

Great Pizza/Atmosphere/Location/Staff

by cardboard

I love coming to this place! They have GREAT pizza (It is flat and basic...Like the name). The staff has always been friendly, even on busy nights. Their art shows are really cool too (Every Tuesday. Except Padre Home Game Days) Good place to meet people too.

  • Pros: Everything from Service to events to food to drinks. And the Big A$$ Fan!
  • Cons: No Cons.

Awesome pizza and wonderful service.

by Charles985

I had a great time the first time I went, which was around 8 o'clock PM. I was new to the place and heard about it from a friend. The pizza was awesome... better than I expected. I love the way the place looks. I've always been a fan of open spaces with a minimalist decor. I came for more pizza later on that night at around 1:30ish and the pizza was just as great and "Amanda Panda" was still the cutest thing ever... Another good point, the sunday crowd was perfect. I don't really like the crowded, loud, impossible to get a drink places all the time. I may have found a sunday spot :) I'll be here again. I'd say about half is because of the pizza, the other is for the atmosphere.

  • Pros: Pizza, Amanda Panda, Charlie-Brown (awesome!)
  • Cons: parking...

GREAT bar service (if you're being served by a male)

by trldt

i've been reading some of the reviews about the service and fortunately, I can say that this wasn't the case for me.

I was served by two different guys at the bar on a Friday night and they were both the BEST. Friendly, fast and cute!

May be to have a good time here, you need to be served by the guys and avoid the girls behind the bar???

  • Pros: The Pizza's are obviously the best
  • Cons: Unpredictable service??

You want bad Service go to Basic

by stoliwench

i went to the basic at about 11:30 pm last night. I am giving one star for not paying to get in. That is it. My party of 6 relatives went straight to the bar and proceeding to order drinks. Not even being for there for 10 mins, my cousin ordered some beer and was calling out another order of shots of Petron. I was right behind her and waited patiently for the girl bartender and the bar help to notice , Hello 2 shots of Petron is not cheap. We basically got ignored for another 15 mins. The girl blond b%$#@* told her that she has been cut off. Who gives her the right to make that decision. Anyways , I was ready to bounce out , Did not get great customer service here. My cousin went up to the bar and ordered 2 shots of Petron and was told by the bar help " is that for you" He said yes , paid for the shots, we drank them and left. Not worth our money. My first time in San Diego at this place , I would not even sit down to eat the pizza everyone raves about. The bartender b%$#@ should go to class for customer service b/c she S

$%#@ at it currently.

  • Pros: did not get shell out cash at the door
  • Cons: horrible service at the bar

Bad bad bad bad bad service, good pizza

by MKaspar713

I like the pizza at Basic, but the service is horrible. The girls that work there look miserable! No smiles, not friendly, and slow. I would only go back for the yummy pizza.

  • Pros: Good Pizza
  • Cons: Horrible service

Awesome neighborhood spot

by notasurfer

This is our new neighborhood hangout in the East Village. I guess it's been open for a while, but we went last week to taste some local beers, and just had such an awesome time. The staff and bartenders are chill, but they still know a lot about beer. The pizzas are simple and cheap and perfect for low-key, but still very "downtown" kind of night. keep it up basic, and please, open up one of these places by the beach!

Graffiti tuesday, Art Show on Tuesday's at Basic

by CindySDLewis

This is a great place to spend your Tuesday evening. They have art to look at and artists painting pictures right there in bar. Their salad was very tasty but was much bigger than I expected so it could be easily shared with at least two people. I had their mashed potato pizza and I would recommend it and will definitely get it again when I go back. The venue had a good amount of people when I arrived around 7pm and then around 9pm it really started to fill up.

In addition to reading the various reviews about the venue a great way to get a feel for the venue is to check out this Web site ShindyTV. The shows hosts interview the staff and patrons at Basic and it is a great way to get the vibe of the venue, learn about their pizza see what the venue is like.

Minimalist East Village watering hole combines chic, urban loft design with a comfortable, neighborhood vibe and thin-crust pizzas.

by Erin Chambers

In Short
Three large, glass garage doors open into the spacious warehouse-turned-neighborhood hangout. Industrial track lighting lines the 20-foot ceilings, from which sheer panels hang to the floor to separate lounge and bar areas. Proud to uphold its monkier, just a few oversized ottomans and one purple felt pool table mark the simple space. Friendly villagers pack in after work or pre-Padre game to munch on huge pizzas and sip locally brewed beers.
