Interesting week

by Lost For Words

I just wasn't able to swim in the legal world. Water was too deep... He tried to teach many different scopes of family law, offered to help me with my personal cases and teach me the in and outs of surrogacy. I just wasn't able to catch on. I just had too many personal issues to be able to travel back and forth. I wish him the best of luck with his new legal assistant or paralegal...

Do not trust this man

by Upsetemployee

His office is sick and dirty! He's liar and replied to my post on CL looking for a job. Asked me what $$ I was looking for? I said anything is better than nothing and he said it was DOE. He asked me to come in the following morning. I went in and he started asking about my life, then when I mentioned Im going through divorce, immediatly he wanted me to get my file from my atty and fire council and have him do my case. He never asked for my DL, my SS#, filled out W-2's nothing! He threw cases infront of my face and just told me to figure it out. He came in my office over and over talking about MY legal issues. At no time did he TEACH me what Im to do, instead just tried to take on my legal case. He asked me if i was interested in Egg donation or Surrogacy. He asked me to post adds about Surrogacy. When I asked him about money he TURNED RUDE. Degraded me, made me feel like I was an idiot. Then said "Why would I pay you....you should pay me for my expertise". After I told him NO PAY, NO WORK for me, I left. He's Not professional. He continues to contact me. I should have listened to my gut feeling but I was DESPERATE for work. He had adds all over the front reception area on adds for people looking for work and even one about "Looking for an affair??" He needs to not be able to practice law.

Do Not work for or use his services

by always read reviews

I was asked to work by Steven. The first day in the office (which was filthy) I did not sign any paper work ie W4 to prove my working there. When I brought up salary through out the day he changed the subject until the very end of the day when I had to ask yet again. I was in the office for 9 hrs. He was gone for over 4 or those hours and I was left alone in the office. He gave me a key before he left which I thought was odd since he did not have a copy of my license or anything to even know who I was. The next day I came back but after a search on his name I found out that he hires people and doesnt pay them and that he was arrested in July. It was a very odd situation that just didnt feel right. Trust your gut and always do a full search on someone before you work for or use their services. If I had done this it would have saved me the trouble. Oh and also if you have used him I would be concerned because legal documents are all over the desks and floors and each file cabinet has the key in it so anyone that "works" there could easily aquire personal information.

My experience

by j3ff

I am pretty amazed at the number of people who had similar experiences as myself. I went to him first because his office was near my house... I was starting my divorce process and had very little experience with the entire process. I "dropped" by his office to get a consultation and find out cost etc..

It didn't take long for me to realize this guy wasn't for me. The biggest problem I had was that I was trying to find a very polite way to leave his office. Every time I tried to get up and leave he would start a new discussion topic and drive me back into the room. I would politely nod my head and smile and say "thank you" etc..

As I was about to leave I made the mistake of telling him that wasn't interested in his services. He turned around to his cash machine and billed me right then and there for over $1500!! I was shocked! --I didn't know what to do... I ended up paying it and moving on simply because it wasn't worth fighting.

I was very upset, but after reading what people have said here, I am somewhat grateful I got out of there and he didn't handle my case. --from now on I will be very careful to read reviews like this site before I hire a lawyer.

This guy is why lawyers have a bad wrap. It would be in their best interest to disbar him forever!

Don't Use Liss

by Upset2268

In 1993 my now X-wife secured Steven Liss as her Attourney. Throughout the process he was very sleezy. Now I know most husbands divorcing their wives would NORMALLY say that the lawyer they are up against is sleezy. The difference here is that EVEN my X-wife thinks to this day the guy was sleezy.

He would play games in court like filing for extensions on the day of the court meetings. Thus to confuse everyone and try to make things as inconvenient as possible for everyone.

My X-wife even told me years later...that he tried to talk her into having a baby for another couple. Reading through his history on adoptions over the past few years (2007-2009) I see why.

My X-wife told me that during our divorce Steven Liss was trying to talk her into having a baby for another couple. This way she would not woe him as much for the legal fees. I am sure that he would have mad ebig money off the deal too. This just sounds WAY too UNETHICAL!

Was he running a baby factory or what? Taking advantage of women going through divorces to feed his other law practice of Adoption? Then steeling money from couples who want to adopt...

YUCK.

What a SLEEZY BALL Steven Liss is.

I was hoping that while dong a search on the Internet of this guy that I would find out he was in prison or at the least not ablt to practice law EVER again! At one point things go tso ugly in my divorce with this guy that I stormed his offices downtown just so I could talk with him about his sleezy practices. He was a coward and snuck out. What a piece of work the guy is.

He was so sleezy that he was able to manipulate the courst into taking over half my paycheck (illegally) every month for Child Support.

I complaind to the State Bar after all the problem I had with him back in 1993. Of course nothing ever came out of that but later on I guess people started believing he REALLY WAS a bad lawyer. He has been disiplined several times since then...I feel he got away with it way too long before someone REALLY looked into it.

After my divorce was over my Attourney suggested that I make a complaint to the BAR (which I did). She helped me put everything in order and do it right...she said she had worked against him before and he does nothing but unethical things and takes advantage of people to the fullest. This is coming from another city Attourney.

I hope Steven Liss eventually gets what is coming to him and what he deserves. Mine was long ago and at the begining but it is nice to hear that he is now getting CAUGHT!

The guy makes me sick!

Us too!!

by pbandjmom

My husband and I unfortunately became a client of his. He took a $5000 retainer, dragged a VERY simple, uncontested guardianship case over a full year with mistakes, no shows, etc.... NEVER once billed us over that year. The very next day after our final court date, served us with a $21000 bill. It took forever to get a detailed billing statement, which was thrown together and hard to make sense of. He has threatened us with wage garnishments and judgments against us, etc.... We have giving him every spare dollar we can to avoid further action against us. Besides feeling like a fool, we have no idea what we can or should do. He randomly and sporadically sends us bills, which includes outrageous interest, that shows our minimal payments have done nothing to the balance. Now what????

The way this all came to light for us? A friend was contacted by him via craigslist to join his "apprenticeship" to becomes an assistant. He offered to hire and pay her after a 60-90 day NONE PAID apprenticeship. Her duties would be answering phones, taking notes and filing. When she told me about it and I asked his name, I just had to laugh. More BS from him!

BUYER BEWARE

by JamesSwift

I don't normally write reviews like this but I'm hoping the more negative press this guy gets, the less people will have to go through the trauma of interacting with him. I was much more fortunate than most of the other people writing as I became very suspicious of him through his harrassing behaviour before I gave him any money. I then googled him and saw all this information which is way worse than what I experienced. He figured we were a couple desperate for a baby and commanded us to immediately wire him somewhere in the range of $35,000. It was so ridiculous the red flag went up immediately. He would send multiple emails and call multiple times a day (trying to get us to send him money) and it got to the point where I became nauseous when I saw his name in my email inbox. THIS IS BEFORE WE EVEN SIGNED ANY PAPERWORK WITH HIM. I won't go into detail regarding his unprofessional behaviour but it was absolutely a joke. There are so many attorneys out there, please look elsewhere if you don't want to have undo stress in your life. And make sure whoever you are considering using, do some research on the internet first before you even contact the person. Hope this helps.

Beware bad Business

by client676

Unprofessional, and one of the worse offices I ever dealt with. Be forewarned, they move this office but the staff does not improve. Please tell as many people as you come in contact with. This office charged services that were already paid for. If you insist on trusting this office keep everything in writing and do not believe anything you are told.

Beware of a Con-Man

by aPOV

Steven R. Liss of La Jolla claims to be a family lawyer. His office staff turnover is a joke. He will hire or rather intern / not pay anyone with hopes of a law career despite any real credentials. He "represents" family law cases, however, his office is horribly disorganized and often times whole dockets of client infromation goes missing. WORST of all he takes advantage of under-educated women in distressed situations. Unlike most "family law" lawyers that focus on family law issues, Liss makes the bulk of his money attempting to convince women to give their children up for adoption so he may collect adoption fees from desperate parents seeking children. He has a seperate line that is advertised as a women's help center, however, he offers NO help to these women and instead tries only to convince them to give their children up; rather or not it is in their best interest.

THIS IS THE MOST UNPROFESSIONAL AND DECEPTIVE PERSON I HAVE EVER MET. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BEAWARE.
