The view from the open terrace is amazing during the day, so bright and airy. It was very noisy and I don't even know if there was music playing at all. The service was good, the bussers kept our water very full all the time. My friend had the burger w/ aged cheddar and bacon- which was excellent and worth every penny. I had the 'most popular dish' I was told- the fig mustard, ham, and arugala panini. It was okay. The figs were so sweet and syrupy that was all one could taste, and no taste of mustard was to be found if there was supposed to be. The side salad and the fries were also great. they promptly brought us our check when ready.

Pros: BURGER, VIEW

Cons: NOISY, PARKING

I had a lovely meal at George's California Modern last Friday. Haven't been there since they remodeled and I was pleasantly surprsed how modern, young & non-stuffy it felt. I had been there prior and the food was excellent, but the atmosphere felt too stuffy. NO MORE! The great bar in the bottom level was very cool. Creative & unique cocktails! Our dinner was beautifully prepared (we had the swordfish, albacore & seafood stew) and tasted excellent. The service was top notch too! Highly recommended for locals & a great place to take your out of town guest. Especially for lunch at the top level of Georges which has such an amazing view. Enjoy!

Pros: Excellent Food, beautiful views, impressive wine & cocktail list

Cons: parking

Ok, I understand that George's is an impressive restaurant. Creative, innovative, amazing, whatever. It's nice but not one of the best. As a foodie ,we enjoyed 5 great nights of dining in the SD area but I would rate George's at the bottom of the list of what we had. The food was fresh, beautifully presented with impeccable service all in a beautiful setting. But, it just didn't do it for me, it tasted, well, ok. Our group ordered the tasting menu because our waiter did a great job selling it. Skip it. It's items off the menu, instead pick what you want and move on. It's also very expensive, over $600 plus tip for 4 people.

Pros: View, good wine list and great service.

Cons: The food is OK where it should be amazing. Expensive, $150pp +.

George's is awesome - The food is amazing (but not over-priced), the specialty mixed drinks at each of the bars are outstanding (they have an on-site mixologist that creates interesting, seasonal drinks with fresh fruits), the atmosphere is fun and inviting, and the view is spectacular (especially at sunset). Great date (or anytime) place!

I went to George's California Modern for a special occasion with family expecting to have a terrific dining experience. I was really looking forward to showing my family what I believed to be one of the top restaurants in San Diego. We started off with mixed drinks that were good and fairly creative but nothing earth-shaking. From there the meal got progressively worse--out of three salads, one was good, one mediocre, and one down-right bad. They were even less successful with the entrees. Of the four entrees (one pork, two fish, and one vegetarian), three were salted to the point of inedibility. I certainly consider myself a salt lover and often add salt to my food but these dishes were so salty that they actually burned one's mouth and literally could not be eaten. Even beyond the extreme saltiness there dishes as a whole were simply unimpressive. The descriptions sounded creative, fresh, and interesting but nearly every entree disappointed. What was described as a delicous sole dish ended up being a poorly cooked, pan fried piece of sole, atop some greens and potatoes that tasted like licking a salt block, and covered in a pathetic hollandaise sauce. Not only did the dish lack any hint of creativity but it was executed terribly at that. It was all really quite bad and uncreative. Overall...a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!

It is an understatement to say that I love George's Upstairs, and it is for one reason only: Their turkey, broccoli, black bean soup. It is literally the best thing I have ever consumed in my life, and on more than one ocassion I have skipped the entree entirely and just gotten more soup. I think I'va had the pork chop and something else before as a main, but I can't even remember them because my soup is clouding my memory. If you're visiting La Jolla, the views are absolutely incredible, and what better way to enjoy them than with a hot bowl of the world's best soup?

Pros: The soup, obviously. The views, the other food is good too!

Cons: Parking, there's usually a wait, and the downstairs portion is a whole different place: classier and way pricier. Make sure you know where you're supposed to be going!

During the summer you can't beat the Ocean Terrace for a lovely lunch or sunset dinner. The food is wonderful and a great value for what they serve. The specialty drinks are pretty good and the wine pours are generous. The view can't be beat and with great food George's Ocean Terrace isn't missing anything that makes a great dining experience.

Pros: Great food, drinks and view

Cons: Don't go when it's cold

I've only been here once for lunch up on the patio area and it was superb. It definitely left a lasting impression on me. I wish to try the place out for dinner but the restaurant is a bit far from where I live. We only went there in passing to San Diego. The service was great and the food we ordered was good. The view from the patio was beautiful on a sunny bright day. Great for pictures!!!

The food is amazing, and the service is impeccable. They pay attention to every detail. It truly is worth the price! Ask for a table near the window for a gorgeous ocean view.

Pros: food, service, view

Cons: none
