Beat sushi deal in SD. I think there are a couple places with better fish, but for the price you simply can't beat ebisu. The omakase is usually excellent, though the large size can vary considerably, it is probably the best bet. The tempura is also better than most, light and not at all greasy with a nice range of vegetables. Great cocktails, but skip the somewhat small wine list. The service is usually great, even though it tends to get very crowded. Another big plus is the late hours, which are a great benefit in sleepy SD where everything closes a little too early.…

My favorite sushi place. About two years ago I left my phone at home on accident and after a late yoga class was trying to call at a payphone across the street to see if anyone would join me for dinner. No responses but I noticed a sushi bar across the street still open at 10:30pm. I decided to eat and luckily wandered into the best sushi spot in San Diego. It wasn't too crowded on the weeknight late hour which made me a little nervous at first, but the friendly staff/chefs made me feel comfortable right away. I ordered my usual favorite rolls which were of the best quality and presentation I had seen.

These days I eat at Ebisu at least once a week and have made friends with the entire staff. I've had almost everything on the menu and then some! I keep coming and rarely go anywhere else mostly because the sushi is the best, but almost equally important is the friendliness and efficiency of the staff, the nice atmosphere/music, and the late hours they stay open. The prices reflect the quality of the food and are therefore not unreasonable. Many signature dishes that you can't find anywhere else have been invented here by the head chefs.

The fact that it's off the main strip makes it a bit more private and intimate to bring a date or friend for good conversation without having to yell over loud music or the crowd. It also means you can usually walk in and won't be waiting an hour to be seated. However if you have a large group more than 6 I would highly suggest making reservation. If you do have to wait, the bar in the back is very nice with original drinks like Shiso Martini. On Thurs Fri Sat this back lounge area is open until 2am and has some very talented live DJs.

The crowd is highly mixed and can not really be categorized. Everyone I've brought here that likes sushi loved it and came back again.…

overrated. food: the sushi is decent. not bad, but nothing special. everything i had was a bit on the bland side. certainly not unpleasant, though. they're rolls are served inside out, which i think takes away from the simpler rolls. the highlight was the spicy sauce, which packed much more kick than at most other places.

price: on the expensive side, but not outrageous. standard rolls and 2 piece nigiri both run around 5.75. specialties are in the 10-12 dollar range. they don't offer any combinations specials, like almost every other sushi restaurant does. if the sushi were above average, i'd call their prices reasonable, but i've had much better for much less.

service: in the restaurant (which is what matters anyway), the service was very good. the staff is friendly and attentive and given the crowd, things came pretty quick. there was a fairly long wait to be seated, but like i said, it was crowded. in the lounge i got snubbed. there were only two people at the bar, myself and a nice looking young lady. the bartender spent his time chatting her up while my drink sat around very empty. i had to call him out a few times to get his attention (eye contact and an empty glass pushed far away weren't good enough). hope he at least got her number...

atmosphere: the place is trendy and hip looking, but you can ignore any claims of 'punk', even in the avril levigne sense of the word. not necessarily a bad thing, just conflicting with the description here. expect to see the same crowd and dress as at the downtown clubs.

overall: ebisu is a so so sushi place, but if trendy atmosphere is more important than the b*ng you get for your buck, you'll probably love it (how socal ;-) ). i haven't been to many sushi places in san diego, so it may very well be the best it has too offer... i sure hope not.…

BEST SUSHI. This restaurant is by far the best sushi place in town and is so reasonably priced I can't believe it! The sushi chefs always deliver a beautiful presentation and the staff always remembers me and my favorite dishes. Great service really is a rarity these days, but this restaurant always delivers, even when they are busy. They are open until midnight making it a favorite for me. Then, on Thurs.- Sat. nights they have a back bar open that features danceable music and a fresh but relaxing decor. I love to go there when I feel like nightlife without the hassles.…

Best Sushi in San Diego!. This Sushi Bar rocks! It is funky, punk, new wave and houses the best Sushi! I have eaten at Seaus, Ono Sushi, KiKi, and a host of others, none compare. It is FRESH, great cuts of fish, the H-BOMB roll, is the BOMB! The staff is friendly, they remember you, what you like to eat and it is just a very cool, trendy Sushi Bar to hang out in with friends or by yourself! EXCELLENT!…
