I ate once at Golden Crown back in '99. The food and service were terrible. Then, sometime in mid '00, I'd heard they were under new ownership and decided to give it a go. I think we were some of the first people there as we were given alot of personal attention by the new owner. The food was really good! The hot and sour soup came with shrimp and chicken and pork and was some of the tastiest I'd ever had. I started eating there several times a week, for lunch and dinner. I was so enamored with the place that I even filmed a movie there. Unfortunately, that owner has since moved on and the place has changed hands once again, and the restaurant has been remodeled. The food is still incredible, but I think they changed chefs and it's not quite as good as it used to be. Don't get me wrong, it's still really really good Chinese, and I've yet to find better in San Diego.

  • Pros: Great chinese food, lots of free parking

I have experienced some of the best Chinese food available, and although this wasn't the best it gets, it was pretty good and I would go there again. It smelled really good when I walked in, which is always a good sign. I ordered two easy to make and kid-friendly dishes: chicken lo-mein and sweet and sour chicken. The lo-mein didn't have as many veggies as I like, but the flavor was balanced with a slightly garlic flavor. Noodles were slightly underdone, which I prefer to overdone and mushy. There was not a lot of chicken, but the pieces were cut well and were good quality white meat. The sweet and sour chicken was "Americanized" and deep fried, just like I was expecting, and was also good cuts of chicken. It had the flavor I was expecting from an orange sweet and sour sauce, and the chicken was cooked so that it was soft but not tough. My toddler ate everything I gave him, which means it has to be good. Everyone else in the restaurant ordered the same thing, homemade pulled noodles with bean sauce. I am going to try that next time.

I did notice that the Oriental people who were seated after me received their drinks, etc, before I did, but the service was friendly. They didn't stop by my table as much as the patrons that I am assuming were their relatives or good friends, and they forgot to give me my tea which I ordered with my meal. I was already eating my meal when someone stopped by (finally) to ask me if I needed anything, and they finally brought me my tea after I reminded them. They were friendly to my toddler, also. Nothing is worse than feeling like your child isn't wanted in someone's establishment! (other than really bad food!). They also made a mistake and charged my card the wrong amount, then cancelled it, then ran it again, so I have two charges pending from my banking account. It would have been nice if they had let me know and charged my card the difference the second time. Now I just have to keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't go through.

  • Pros: lots of parking, kid friendly
  • Cons: not a lot of food for the price (I ordered full platters thinking I would have a lot to take home)

In Short
The dining area has been remodeled to encourage more patrons to eat in rather than order takeout, but it's the extensive menu of Chinese and Korean food that has made this spot a local favorite. Hand-pulled noodles served with vegetables and a spicy black bean sauce top the list of crowd pleasers, along with crispy dumplings and paper-wrapped chicken. Other specialties include kung pao calamari, curry shrimp, sesame beef and pineapple fried rice.

This restaurant is a korean style chinese restaurant, meaning they cook their Chinese dishes from kind of a Korean perspective. They even serve kimchi with their meals. Their food is good and the hot and sour soup is even better. The prices are decent, and they give really large portions, so it's great if you're hungry or eat a lot. Good service.
